Insider Last post on this: On the notion that Matt Weiss is “the leak”

I’ve seen this hypothesized and I wanted to address it. This is an OPINION and some aspects of my argument may be based on what I know (that’s already been discussed here) and general opinion.

For the 8,000th time, the Weiss investigation has ZERO to do with Michigan’s current investigation. Zero. Zilch. The FBI didn’t stumble upon on sign-stealing stuff and said, hey, “The NCAA could use this!”

The fact is, we don’t know the source. We have a good idea but that’s still hypothesizing without fact.

If Weiss was the leak, that would mean the coordinators were aware which opens up a huge can of worms for the football program, that would mean trouble.

That directly conflicts with the NCAAs meeting on Thursday. You think the NCAA would’ve brought that up? Would be weird if the admin were told about Weiss that there’s still confidence and no panic.

Truth is, we don’t know what Weiss is being investigated for but we DO know it’s not related to what’s going on right now.

Just seems hard to believe that he’s responsible for all of this considering all the information that’s out there for public consumption about the current investigation.

Some observations.. long

Some things I've noticed that are fascinating to me. Aside from a few outliers and anyone who has a dog in this fight, I've noticed most football people, be it coaches or players past and present are saying this isn't as big of a deal as it being portrayed. On the other hand, the media is acting like this is the biggest American scandal since Bill and Monica in the oval office.
So why is this? I think the football people realize how rampant these type of things are and that they all do it, so they down play it. Conversely, the media benefits and profits from this, so the want to sensationalize and keep this thing on the front page. Good for the bottom line, lots of clicks and subscribers gained.
The way they interact with each other is also interesting. These athletes get these jobs with no journalism background and it probably bothers some in the media. But when the media people push back on the football guys and suggest they know more about the game is just insane. I heard a guy on local radio here in Detroit suggest that John Jansen doesn't know anything anymore because of how much the game has changed since he retired. If the athlete points out that the broadcaster has no actual football experience they get crucified for bringing up that uncomfortable truth. Human behavior, as always, is fascinating.

Recruiting Jeremiah Beasley, Bryce Underwood on if sign stealing allegations impact perception of Michigan

Went to see Michigan commit Jeremiah Beasley and five-star QB and UM target Bryce Underwood last night for Belleville’s first round playoff game.

Will have a story by Monday on their recruiting processes and things that are beyond sign stealing, but did briefly ask them both about whether the current allegations change their perceptions of Michigan.

Underwood simply said “no sir” and confirmed that situation has no bearing on what he thinks of the Wolverines at this time.

Beasley, who’s been committed since June, said he’s had conversations about it with the other commits and they’ve banded together and are staying loyal to Michigan.

“I feel like we’re all good, we’re still a family and going to keep it that way,” he said.

I hate not having a game today

I would much rather be watching another dominant performance from our great team, and even better group of athletes, such class acts. I would rather being donning my "M" gear getting my beverages ready and hearing all about FOOTBALL. Instead we are stuck watching other teams and listening to sign stealing drama (that every other team does). I can't wait until next Saturday when I'LL BE AT THE GAME...(I'm not local, so traveling and cannot wait). This week cannot pass fast enough.

So, we have GA-FL, oSu-whiskey, and FL State-Wake Forest as far as top 4 ranked teams (outside of us). What do we want to see in those and why?

I want to see FL > GA because I hate GA and they are overrated this year.
I want to see Wake Forest > FL State because FL State is overrated as well, the entire ACC is a joke and they don't deserve a playoff spot.
I never want to see an bucknut win, but I also want to ruin their season and playoff hopes in one fell swoop. A loss to the dumpster fire West would be highly entertaining though.

Your thoughts?

Okay, okay…just have to state that I cannot recall wanting to beat the ‘Whinenuts’ sooo much!

My strong dislike for OSU goes back to Wayne Woodrow “Woody” Hayes. A loss to them back in the Bo-Woody Era left me brooding and seething 365 days….to the next game. But this recent travesty on the Buckeyes part somehow elevates things to another level.
Needless to say, I think we all would really savor another blowout, right in our own Big House.
That is all.

Doubt is the fuel for greatness

While I there is a lot of regurgitation of speculation I think one result that may come for sure is enhanced motivation. People saying the only reason the team (last year and current) is because of cheating. THAT might just be the fuel to take our focus from an 8 to a 10. The desire to prove others wrong is perhaps the greatest motivator in history. Confident we are going to really look to take it out on Day and his Charmin warriors as a result!

NCAA Meeting

I wonder if the meeting Thursday with the NCAA was intended to provide UM with evidence that may have been provided to them illegally to shield against and potential civil or criminal actions Michigan might take. It just seems odd that they would meet so early in the process and only with university officials.

Another good rant from The Herd on Friday about the NCAA and the allegations surrounding Michigan football

I understand some may think he's just trying to boost ratings. I happen to think Colin loves CF just as much as the rest of us. His comment about FOX Noon Kickoff is spot on. I feel any support with our situation from someone with his credentials isn't a bad thing. The more the better.

with almost every game televised

it isn't hard to get a copy of "game film" even before the formal exchange between teams.

You know teams analyze that for tendencies, down and distance as well as what plays are run from various formations.

You know the analysts will separate the film so a DB can look at a WR and what they do on every play. Their moves, their routes, etc. Non of this is illegal.

Same would apply to the OL looking at the moves used by the DL and they type of blitzes they have used in the past. You can draw conclusions from that. In some cases and opponent may tip a play themselves. how their hand is positioned, how far back do they line up from the LOS, etc.

to say that sign stealing is the definitive reason for a team being better than another, is hard to believe. And that is before you start to account for the skill, experience, speed and/or strength differences between players.

As Prime said, I can give you the playbook, but that doesn't mean you'll stop me.

Insider Intel: On paranoia and improper access

Still working on confirming a few things before reporting anything, so doing a lot of work behind the scenes.

Here’s what I can confirm, however:

There is a bit of paranoia around Schembechler Hall with all these recent leaks and the discussion around the firm gaining accesss to files. So much so that a request was made to sweep the building for bugs. HIGHLY unlikely that anything was found but that tells you about the paranoia.

Elsewhere…

I have confirmed that Greg Schiano has reached out to multiple Michigan opponents, both within the conference and out of it, to complain about Michigan’s sign-stealing operation. As recently as last month.

Also, the paranoia about possible improper access has extended into the conference as well, as the Big Ten has asked the entire conference to check whether their performance and video accounts such as Hudl, Catapult, etc. had unusual access or activity. Some BELIEVE this is related to the Michigan/Stalions investigation and how an outside firm accessed information.

That’s all I can report on for now. More when I have it.
