This is a "classic recent MSU roster":
- Cohen Carr is Aaron Henry or Gabe Brown- Almost carbon copies: Dunk/drive first, second and third, with minimal perimeter game. The guy, at 6'5" has taken a total of 9 three-point shots, and made 3 in his career. At 6'5", he has the range of a PF.
- Akins is a poor man's version of Tyson Walker. Strangely enough- MSU's most "talented shooter" is shooting 29% from 3...Thus the "poor man". Keep in mind how different Kobe Bufkin- a recruit tethered to Akins due to state rankings and play in high school. Bufkin is two years into his NBA career, while Akins will be in Europe, at best after 4 full MSU seasons- 29% from three ain't gonna get it, especially for a kid who's supposed to be a shooter.
- Their C position is basically a multitude of players who lack in one area or another, with a good amount of fouls to give, but not much D. Szymon Zapala and Carson Cooper basically combine to reprise what hapless former top recruits Maddy Sissoko and Marcus Bingham did the last 3 seasons.
- Tre Holloman? Yawn. Tum Tum Nairn all over again- Great D, terrible shooter. 37% FG. Yet he is 3rd on the team in scoring. Yuck.
- Of course, no MSU team would be complete without underperforming former elite recruits- Xavier Booker and Jeremy Fears should not be this bad 2 full seasons into their careers. Fears has a very good assist to TO rate, but he's not dominating at the level of similarly-ranked Gs in the 2023 class. Booker was the #2 recruit overall, expected to be a season into his NBA career, based on expectations. As comparisons Max Christie scored 9.3 PPG while shooting 38% from the field and 32% from 3 before leaving East Landfill for the NBA. Also, does anyone remember Rocket Watts as a "must have" recruit? 🤣

- Frankie Fiddler- Skinny 6'7" transfer from Omaha is the top scorer from the bench- shooting an apt 39% FG, and 19% from 3. Turrible.
Their best players are 6'3", 185 lb. Jase Richardson (10.4 PPG, 52% FG, 39% from 3) and 6'9" Jaxson Kohler (8.2 PPG, 7.7 RPG, 51% FG, 33% from 3)...The issue for Kohler is that, as their key big @ 20 MPG, he is only 6'9" and will have to guard either Goldin, Wolf, or both, then have to contend with a very similar player in Will Tschetter coming off our bench. When MSU has to go big, their spacing, athleticism, and ability to run suffers.
Another issue? Richardson is 6'3". Akins is their biggest G at 6'4' 195. MSU doesn't have the size mismatch at G that they used to be able to take advantage of when fat-a$$ A.J. Hoggard @ 6'4", 220 was their PG last season. Their top 3 scorers are 6'4", 6'3", and 6'2", with Fears - their leading assist guy, at 6'2". Carr is 6'5". Only Carr weighs more than 200 lbs, and he's listed as a F.
They are really a small team. But they do have a lot of sloppy depth- guys who play different roles, or sometimes not at all from game to game. Their chance to win comes solely on D, turning Michigan over, and winning in the open court. If Michigan can keep their TOs below 13-14, and both teams shoot as they have all season from 3, then MSU won't have enough to win, IMO.
