Insider OT: OSU DC coaching search

Ohio State is looking to replace defensive coordinator Jim Knowles who left for Penn State.
I am not going to get into the spin zone that is happening when it comes to that move, feel free to look it up if you like.

Initial talk was the Buckeyes would look to promote safeties coach Matt Guerrieri. Some around OSU are trying to frame him as their Jesse Minter.
He worked with Knowles for a long time, back to Duke, so the thought is he would be the continuation of Knowles scheme. He was co-DC with Knowles for 3 years at Duke and came to OSU as an analyst, went to Indiana to be co-DC for a year, and then back to OSU as safeties coach this year.

External wise the name I keep hearing is Ole Miss DC Pete Golding.
Golding has been Ole Miss' DC for the last two seasons after spending the previous five years at Alabama. Golding would be a departure in terms of scheme, as he runs a modern defense with a lot of different fronts and secondary that utilize hybrid players. Golding makes $2.15M at Ole Miss, so expect another big payday to get him to Columbus. Caleb Downs was a big fan of Golding who recruited him to Alabama, but never played for him as he departed for Ole Miss a couple of weeks later. Day tends to get input from his best players, so I wouldn't be surprised if Downs is pushing for Golding.

A familiar name out there is also Kansas City's DL coach Joe Cullen. You'll remember Michigan and Sherrone Moore spoke with Cullen last season and it appeared Cullen was heading toward becoming the next DC at Michigan before choosing to stay in the NFL the week before the Super Bowl. Similar timelines here. Cullen's connection to Michigan was through the Ravens. With OSU, he worked for Urban Meyer with the Jaguars and he's a New England native like Ryan Day.

It's time for my rant about halftime.

It's time for the NFL to reimagine the halftime show. The last halftime show I thought was great was Bruno Mars/ Beyonce, and before that, Prince. I would have been happier last night if they had brought in local jazz musicians from Bourbon St.

I get that I am not the target demo, but last night left much to be desired.

I don't think it was just old guys like me who thought they missed the mark last night. I have nine employees, men and women, ranging in age from mid-20s to mid-30s. Three are Latino, one is Asian, and one is a lesbian. The rest are white. Four thought it was terrible, one thought it was great, and the rest said it could have been much better.

Michigan Baseball question....

This question is for anyone in the know really, but hopefully Josh can chime in. How is the baseball program looking for this year and as a whole? I know there were a lot of mixed emotions when Tracy Smith got the job and I'm wondering if the outlook going forward is good and Smith has done a good job or are things not looking as good as hoped? Any info is appreciated!

Michigan up to AP 20th in MBB

Last word on the Super Bowl.

I thought KC didn't look as good as they have in the past all year long. I think they were fortunate to make it to the SB,

That said, when you have a quarterback like PM, anything can happen. I don't know if we saw the beginning of KC's end last night, but when you get blown out like that, it usually means problems they have been covering up are exposed.

I was sad that Detroit wasn't in the game, but the Lions are still on the rise and hungry. I just hope we don't become the Buffalo Bill of the Midwest.

Detroit Arena & Stadium names

ESPN had an article about age of all the current NFL stadiums. I'm reading through all the name changes of other stadiums. Dolphins Stadium has had 8 different names since 1987. I started thinking about the Detroit Arena & Stadium names. We have had so few name changes in our history. It's defying the trends at this point. Comerica especially. Banks go through mergers all the time & change their names.

Navin Field/Briggs Stadium/Tiger Stadium - Ironically, the only stadium with name changes was before corporate naming was a thing.

Olympia Stadium - Opened & closed with the same name

Cobo Arena - Opened & closed with the same name

Pontiac Metropolitan Stadium/Pontiac Silverdome - First two years as Pontiac Metropolitan Stadium.

Joe Louis Arena - Opened & closed with the same name

The Palace of Auburn Hills - Opened & closed with the same name

Comerica Park - Same name since opening

Ford Field - Same name since opening

Little Caesers Arena - Same name since opening
