Insider Intel: A DL coach target gaining traction…

Did some more asking around this evening about the direction the DL coach search is headed and, right now, it appears that conversations between one candidate in particular and Sherrone Moore are picking up steam.

We have been told that Wisconsin DL coach Greg Scruggs and Moore have spoken about the job and progress has been made in that regard.

We’re told that Moore has offered a significant raise to Scruggs and that he is open to discussions. Still some moving parts happening. I think part of it is to get a DC hire nailed down first.

The overall message: “I need you at Michigan.”

Scruggs would be a BIG win for Moore and would be an excellent recruiter. We’re told that Scruggs and Moore were good friends during their days together at Louisville so there’s a connection there.

Stay tuned for more when I get it.

Insider Intel: 2/11 DL coach update

As I hinted on Friday, Greg Scruggs’ name had been the only consistent name to be linked with the open DL coach position.

I do think progress has been made from Thursday through this weekend and things continue to trend in Scruggs’ direction.

At this point, the deal would have to fall apart in order for this to not get over the finish line. I’ll obviously keep an ear out and can’t rule anything out with how crazy these past few weeks have been but it’s becoming clear that Scruggs wants the job.

Scruggs is the only name we have been aware of that Moore has reached out to and in-depth discussions have been conducted, including a significant raise for Scruggs, and progress has been made.

For instance, as of Sunday, Terrance Jamison has NOT been contacted by Michigan. He certainly seems next in line and, if that happens, that’ll be my indicator that things have changed.

I don’t have timelines on specifics for when this gets done but I get the sense that all we’re waiting for is signing on the dotted line at this point.

I’ve learned not to speak in certainties but it’s hard to ignore the progress made.

More when I have it.

You all paying attention to this stuff?

Our athletic director gets appointed to perhaps the most visible (and influential?) post in college football for athletic directors.

Within a few hours some (cough) trusted voices in and around Michigan sports media are immediately reporting a rumored extension and taking polls about what folks (that they’ve primed up for years) think about it.

Better bury the lede right???

Contrary to what most of you think Im not sure if I even want Warde to be extended.

But I know dirty when I see it and the fully transparent whisper campaign going on by Michigans own to bring down one of their own is flat out gross. Gross!!

I wonder how the Gene Smiths of the world would have handled such fringe players…..

What’s hysterical is based on yesterdays appointment their effectiveness is clearly next to nothing other than riling up an online population ripe to be riled up.

Insider Some clarity on LB coaching search…

Wilkins was heavily rumored to follow Wink to Ann Arbor but I get the sense that the desire was to find someone with recruiting chops in the role and it was best for all sides.

To add, I also think Wilkins wanted to be in the NFL regardless.

I happen to agree, I think Michigan can add an asset on the trail.

He found a soft landing in the NFL, which helps.

Insider Another update on DL coach…

I still believe that Greg Scruggs is the leader in the clubhouse for the job but I am told that Wink is “aware” of Terrance Jamison of Illinois.

If it’s not Scruggs, I’d say Jamison is not far behind him. To be clear, Jamison has yet to be contacted by Michigan. If he does, I would say that Scruggs is out of the picture.

As for which one, you’d take either or in a heartbeat. Jamison is a technician and would build STUD DL on a yearly basis. Scruggs is excellent, too. Two great additions.

No Need To Panic

These players from the defending national championship team, surrounded by dozens of returning teammates, and friends on both sides of the ball, with an undefeated streak (the only one) on l the line, have no reason to come back? Perhaps the players are "normal human" late teen and early 20-year old men whose best friends are on the team, and with friends or significant others among the student population, living on a beautiful Ann Arbor campus that has become home to them.

Heck, I know that a bunch of posters on this site have been wondering why guys like Kechaun Bennett, who despite being buried down the depth chart hasn't hit the portal yet. If you don't want to read the article, I'll just state that Bennett is dating this USC recruit's older sister, who goes to Michigan.

After reading this I chuckled and thought with a smile: How many football players on our squad are also tied to the University and the football program by their girlfriends being Michigan students? :)

These players are people first with connections outside of football to the University of Michigan. I think that Graham and Loveland both were on some All-Academic lists... Perhaps they have interest in actually being students and graduating. Many of these football players end up getting married to their Michigan girlfriends, and have lifelong friends who aren't football players.

Many reasons that keep a kid at Michigan other than NIL money, but since some seem to worry so much about "Michigan not doing NIL", let me just place this here:

Did Michigan have a Star Return After Signing a Couple of NIL Deals?

Indeed: Michigan Football Star Donovan Edwards Signs Pair of NIL Deals After Championship Heroics

In other words, we read how JJ was quietly taken care of, and Will as well not long after he committed and joined the team early. Blake was doing well enough with NIL money that he was using a lot to give back.

Elsewhere there already has been havoc: Quinn Ewers, Caleb Williams, and Bo Nix were lifted from their previous squads (OSU, OU, and Auburn- far from lightweights) for big $. Big time WR like Jordan Addison (from Pitt to USC) and Keon Coleman (MSU to FSU) were big $ portal stars.

In addition, we've seen coaches flip from program to program, taking their players, and coaching staff with them.

All of Michigan's major player losses have been to the NFL.

All of Michigan's major coaching losses have been to the NFL.

Perhaps that should tell some of the more negative people that perhaps Michigan should be proud:

Michigan players and coaches leave for only better propositions, none of which are at other college programs.

Spitballing a name I’d like for DB coach…

Not saying this will for sure happen or that he’ll even be called but I’d love for Michigan to get Corey Parker from Toledo. Great developer of talent, will likely have a first rounder in the upcoming draft and I think he’d be an asset on the trail.
