Insider Spring Intel 3/29: Defense shines

Before I go on and discuss this week in practice, I should preface that it’s almost always the case that the defense is ahead of the offense when the bullets are live and the hitting starts.

- With that being said, the defense had a really good week this week. Wink’s pressures and blitzes “handled” the offense thoroughly.
- As for quarterbacks, we’re told that a lot of interceptions were thrown this week and there were some inconsistencies from all quarterbacks.
- There is currently no clear #1 QB yet

- On defense in particular, the linebacker group continues to receive a lot of praise. A LOT of praise.
- Jaishawn Barham is quickly turning into the spring darling for the program, who continues to receive a praise.
- We’re told Barham looks like a “freak” and is all over the place, quickly fitting in on defense.

As for the early offensive struggles, things need time to gel and the panic button should not be pressed currently. The defense is always ahead of the offense early but the offense needs time to get rhythm and gel, a lot of early pressure by Wink doesn’t necessarily allow that but it’s good practice.

More when I have it.

Also really encouraged with…

Sherrone Moore and Sean Magee teaming up in the NIL sphere. Things are definitely different in that regard and you will see more recruits visiting that typically wouldn’t in the past. More five-stars, etc.

The plan to be aggressive with NIL will pay off and as we all know, results will tell the whole story but there is a lot of encouraging stuff out there, particularly with Jordon Davison.

Michigan Softball is 🔥🔥🔥

On Mar 1 and 19 games into this season, the team batting average was .218.
Thirty days later, the team batting average is up to .276 with five players hitting .304 or better.
They are on a ten-game winning streak.
All batters are coming up to the plate with a noticeable confidence and certainty whereas before there was doubt and frustration.
There are a lot of tough games to go in the rest of this season, but it's great to see how UM softball is regaining its swagger.

M baseball thumps Maryland today

In probably the best overall performance of the season M beat Maryland's ace 12-1.

Jacob Denner gave up 3 hits in 7 2/3 innings. M hits two bombs (Hrustich & Priest) with Stanton and Caruso getting 3 & 4 hits respectively.

M is 3-2 in the B1G. They lost a tough one yesterday taking a 2 run lead into the 9th but giving up 5 runs.

This team still struggles on the mound but is young and missing Kim who has been out since early March.

10-17 overall... and may struggle to get to .500 but still have had some moments.

With any luck, they could be 5-0 in the B1G, but anything which could have happened, did.

Recruiting An intriguing note from Gorney here...

In this article about five-star RB Jordon Davison:

In recent days, Ohio State had emerged as the front-runner in Davison’s recruitment but that could be flipped on its head now that position coach Tony Alford has left the Buckeyes to coach at Michigan. A visit to Ann Arbor could be in the works for the five-star running back from Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei along with Texas, Colorado and others. Michigan was never a major contender for Davison but with Alford there now, it’s emerging in a big way.

Insider Intel: Initial returns on five-star RB Jordon Davison’s visit

Spoke to some folks in the immediate aftermath of five-star RB Jordon Davison’s visit to Michigan this week.

Some VERY positive reactions coming out of the visit. The vibes were high and Tony Alford is going to give Michigan a shot here.

OSU, Texas and others are going to throw everything they’ve got at him but Michigan is certainly going to be in the mix.

Is Anyone Hearing…?

… anything regarding conference realignment?

There’s smoke down here in SEC-land that the Clemson or Florida Stste lawsuits against the ACC might be headed towards quicker than expected adjudication in favor of the plaintiffs.

Were that to be the case, a bunch of ACC member schools would be running for an exit from the ACC if they had an invitation from either the Big Ten or SEC. The ACC would appeal of course, but such a ruling would certainly be a step towards conference realignment far sooner than expected.

Anyone hearing anything?
