4 Former Football Players Sue NCAA, Big Ten

Four former Michigan football players, including Braylon Edwards and Denard Robinson, have filed a class-action suit against the NCAA and Big Ten Network seeking more than $50 million for being “unlawfully denied” making money off their name, image and likeness.

Brian Cook's offensive analysis is a great read

Not sure some will be able to handle reading it, but this is a damn good writeup.

This is not a Colston Loveland problem. This is a coaching problem. Dude is not AJ Barner, but Michigan repeatedly had him put his hand in the dirt and the aligned so that he literally could not run a route. I'm just a guy on the internet but that makes no sense to me.

They are no strangers to praising other teams in their reviews, and he thinks not only did Texas defense not do anything special, he doesn't think their defense is any good.

He isn't just saying things to say things and being insufferable, he is top tier and about as fair as it comes. He is backing what a lot have said with his expert analysis.

Insider Day before check-in...

I posted earlier in the week that I don't expect any changes to be made heading into the Arkansas State in terms of personnel. After asking around, I haven't gotten a straight answer yet but I would still be surprised. I do know they're giving a lot of reps in practice to depth OL pieces as well.

They had a great week of practice and all that, I'm told, so we'll see how that translates to tomorrow.

I'll use this thread to post further updates if I hear anything.

Football Analyzing the opposition: Arkansas State preview

No. 17 Michigan (1-1) welcomes Arkansas State (2-0) to Ann Arbor on Saturday afternoon.

Analyzing the matchup between the Wolverines and Red Wolves and making a prediction:

Michigan did in fact succeed in the transfer portal

There's been a lot of discussion regarding Michigan's lack of effort in the transfer portal this year.

I think one point that has been overlooked is that Michigan did in fact, succeed in the transfer portal, but not in a traditional way.

Michigan's coaching staff and NIL program focused heavily on RETAINING our existing players rather than reeling in new ones.

In 2024, Michigan played defense rather than offense in the portal and in this regard, Michigan was very succesful.

Just look at what happened to Alabama or Washington. I agree, that Michigan should have gone after a QB and a lineman or two but the timing just did not work out.

Moore also had to contend with filling out a coaching staff. Cut Moore & Co. some slack.

By the time, our roster and coaching staff had stabilized, the window for the portal was essentially over.

With that being said, Michigan should absolutely RAID the transfer portal in 2024/2025.

8 days...

I've been watching the panic on all the Michigan message boards over the Texas loss and it feels very reactionary. The Longhorns may well be the best team in the country right now. Personally, I think Texas did us did us a favor. It's an early wake up call from a non-conference opponent-better to get that early. Michigan got more great improvement film from that game than they could have gotten from a 100 fall practices. Actions have consequences. Now the players know what happens when they lose discipline. They know what needs to get better. But most importantly, they know what happens if they don't pay attention to details and improve. It's also going to establish a baseline for Sherrone Moore era accountability. Is accountability and culture just words or are they going to mean what they meant when Jim Harbaugh was here? Leaders are born from moments like these.

Panicking now is pointless and premature. We have 8 days until we will really know what kind of football team we have. Do we have the kind that takes a beating and folds, or the kind that learns and evolves from their mistakes? When USC comes to town is 8 days we will know where this Michigan team is headed and what they are made of.

Go Blue!

Ouch!

That’s about all I can say regarding the Michigan vs Texas game in game two of this young season. Michigan was beaten by a better team. Texas played better, and had an answer for everything Michigan tried.

After a day or two of thinking about it though, I came up with this revelation. What I saw in that game was the Michigan team of 2023…..only they were wearing Texas uniforms. Texas did to Michigan what Michigan did to every opponent on their schedule a year ago. While we are mourning this loss, last year our opponents were doing what we are doing this week.

Think about it, Texas is coming off a National Playoff semi final loss they felt they should have won. They have a veteran quarterback who came back to take his team to a national title. They have veteran offensive and defensive lines. They are loaded at skilled the positions. 2:46 PMentire coaching staff returns in tact. They appear to be on a mission to win a national title. Does that sound familiar? It’s exactly what Michigan was a year ago. That’s who Michigan played in week two.

As I have said this entire off season, you do not lose a dozen players or more to the NFL and play at the same level with that kind of talent turnover. That is what Michigan faces. It’s even more difficult to play at a championship level with the entire offensive line being new, and the most important position, the quarterback being new.

And, I don’t buy the argument that Michigan didn’t work the transfer portal enough to restock. First of all, when you go there, you have to have money, because in this day and age of NIL, money for these transfer portal players is the highest bidder prevails. Just ask Ohio State who are rumored to have a 20-25 million dollar payroll along the banks of the Olentangy. I don’t doubt that Michigan has enough resources for that, but, it’s also about what’s out there to buy. Like the great lyric in a classic Rolling Stones song, “You can’t always get what you want.”

For instance, last season, Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy declared for the NFL draft on Jan 14th…2 of the top 4 quarterbacks in the portal, according to on3.com, were already committed elsewhere, Cam Ward to Miami, and Riley Leonard to Notre Dame. (How’d that work out for the Irish vs Northern Illinois?) The other two top QB’s on the list went a week and two weeks later. So, while going through the rather arduous task of preparing for a national title playoff run, and dealing with a witch hunt from the soon to be defunct NCAA, and J.J. not officially declaring for the draft until January 14, the next highest rated quarterback in the portal at #41 was their next choice. So, just saying that Michigan didn’t do their job by not playing portal ball is misleading.

Let’s also not forget, Michigan already recruited Freshman Jadyn Davis to their roster, a four star quarterback out of North Carolina. Jadyn was rated as the number 3 quarterback nationally by ESPN. He was a two time Mr. Football in North Carolina. Sounds like a pretty good prospect huh? Finding an entire offensive line and quarterback from the portal is impossible and economically a stretch. So, lets slow the roll on the critics of personnel, and not working the portal. Michigan has done their due diligence and under the changing financial environment in college football, they are going to be fine.

That being said, there is no question this team must play better. You can’t turn it over three times and give what may be the best team in the country a short field to work. Defensively, Michigan was very good in the red zone. The one thing I know is that in a copy-cat game, which college football is, other teams will attack Michigan’s secondary opposite the side Will Johnson is playing, so adjust and get ready for that.

Offensively, the running game must get better and that’s on everyone… the O-line, fullbacks, tight ends, running backs, coaches. The Quarterback play must get better. Everybody in Schembechler Hall knows that. I, for one, am looking forward to more games this year. I find it a compelling story to see how much Michigan can improve. We are so very lucky to have had a three year run that we have had. Don’t ever forget that. Now, we are experiencing some adversity. It is a test for all of us.

When you get the chance visit jimbrandstatter.com and get your copy of my audio book "Voices of Michigan Stadium" a look at the history of Michigan football as told by the legends who made that history.

We lost a Legend in Greg Harden

He was a behind the scenes life coach, mentor, counsellor and Associate Athletic Director. Originally hired by Bo, he was a force that helped so many student athletes mature into working professionals and family men. He mentored my brother and Tom Brady. Hell be sorely missed. Please keep him in your prayers.

If Tuttle is a supposed option

Then he needs to get some minutes this week.

I honestly don't think he is an upgrade over Warren, but that isn't my or the others who agree choice to make.

He's not a guy that is talented enough to come in versus usc with no game action and then be expected to do anything.

If there is an intention to have the season be relevant beyond usc, I think you need to go all in with your chips here.

If they think Warren is holding them back (which they aren't saying), then you gotta go with Tuttle now.

Reading between the lines, their Tuttle mentions is hinting that they aren't as behind Warren as much as they say.

My conclusion is you go to Tuttle now if he is the best option.

Don't wait.

Saying all this, unless Warren soils his nike combat compression shorts this week, I don't know how you make a move.

Can It Be This Bad?

I’ve watched a lot of college football e early this season. Tonight I’m watching Arizona State vs. Texas State. Both QBs are playing with decent passing results. ASU’s QB is 19/28 for 246 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT. The Texas State QB is 28/42 for 265 yards, 4 TDs and 1 INT.

Both offenses look reasonably crisp, the QBs seem capable of putting their passes right on the numbers of their receivers.

So here we are going into our third game, hardly passing the ball at all. What is it, can’t our QBs throw the ball as well as some unknown QBs on unranked teams? Or is it our offensive scheme? Or receivers who can’t get free, or hang onto the ball when they do?

Are we a running team with a top runner who doesn’t gain much yardage?. Is our tepid pass offense limited by our QB ‘s throwing ability, or is it scheme? Or receivers who can’t get free and can’t catch the ball when they do?

Let’s see how good Arkansas State’s QB and pass offensive looks against us on Saturday. I don’t think our offensive problems are one dimensional. There are a whole lot of people responsible.

It's Good News Wednesday! 9-11-24

My good news is that the Texas game is behind us, and now we know what we're up against. There is a lot of work to do, and it needs to start this week.

I honestly think Davis will become a pretty good quarterback if the O-line improves and we develop a run game.

My oldest turned 35 on Monday. He wanted to keep it low-key, so that's what we did. My sister is next on 9-21.

I'm going for blood work for my bi-annual check-up, and I'm excited to see if all my diet and exercise efforts are reflected in the numbers.

Life is good, and work is fast-paced. I like it that way.

What's your good news?

Jadyn Davis

Play the young kid and develop him.

He's not going to be worse than the current shit show we have going on.

Look, I get it, it's early for Davis, but as a QB you only truly develop by playing football.

There's no point for Michigan to have a lousy season this year, develop Warren and then have to do it all over again next year.

Play Davis at QB.

Put your most explosive players on the field. Use Orji as a RB/WR who can throw.
