Offense
A lot of the conversation from the national media and folks that don't watch UM day in and day out talk about Wash O vs. UMich's defense and how we plan to stop or slow it down.
However, just as critical is how the Wash defense will slow down our offense. UM Offense is an absolute and total mismatch, even if we're not the most explosive O in the country. Washington DTs are their weak spot and continually got pushed out of their gaps vs. Texas and really any other halfway decent rushing team. UM will also not go away from the run like Sark and other teams have done. Wash defense has only given up less than 3 YPC against Little Bro, with everybody else averaging 4.0 YPC plus.
I expect the Wash defense to load the box and take some gambles to get them off the field and the UM offense off schedule. Wash Secondary isn't half bad, but if the run game is most likely dominating, I expect Play Action and our WR speed to be a big problem as I look for JJ to have a big game.
Also, it's not talked about enough, but our O finally ends the murder row of Defenses they've faced. I expect a huge game from JJ and the backs as they get over the 30-point mark again.
Defense
An enormous challenge, but I think Penix and CO come back to earth ever so slightly tonight. UT has a bad Secondary and had a lousy defense plan against this offense.
Wash doesn't run a ton of route combinations like most Air Raid-type teams ( Go/comebacks, slot fade, clearout/deep in, four verts, bubbles, swings), but they're very good at what they do and run it from a ton of different formations and motions.
The core of the Air Raid is to run your routes based on what the defense is running, and I expect Minter to mix coverages/pressures to attempt to confuse not only Penix but the WR routes as well to disrupt timing.
Tackles are big, and a very good pass protection team included their RB Johnson, who is a huge component in picking up blitzes - if he can't play at 100%, it will be a big loss for their side. The Interior isn't as good as the tackles, with the weak spot at the Center. I expect our DTs to be successful with interior rushes - we need to push Penix off his spot - he will be deadly if not.
I expect lots of cushion from the secondary and a steady mix of coverage (our OSU defense, more or less) to try and force the Washington defense to drive the length of the field.
