As far as the up to the 15 minutes on NFL Network, Spanos has done something I never thought his cheap ass with less money than Mark Davis would do, given the fact he’s done nothing but live off of Dad’s money and was sued by his sister over his mismanagement and dubious financials with his’s father’s one good legacy, his expansive charitable foundation. Then the idiot nuked his NFL team in a spat with San Diego over a new stadium deal where they ended up only 200 million apart on the deal, so Spanos, out of only ego, moves the Chargers to LA and has lost at least 4 times as much money by playing in a 20,000 fan soccer field for 2 years, then he now pays rent to the owner of the Rams to play at SoFi..he makes no money from naming rights, advertising, beer company deals…nothing. His team has about 50,000 Los Angelenos fans who are just being contrarians. The sports hierarchy in LA is such..
Dodgers - don’t talk to me about “Showtime“..LA is 1st and foremost a baseball town. Always will be.
The Lakers - like the tv show MASH..great long ago,. The last decade of seasons? lost all the “Magic”..pun intended
Rams
Raiders
USC Trojans
Sparks - WNBA is the fastest growing sports league in the US
Kings
Galaxy/LAFC - half of LA is Latino, MLS popularity is gigante! the “El Traffico” derby - genius name/big as it gets
Clippers
Chargers
Spanos is likely the poorest owner in the NFL, likely one of bottom 3 dumbest owners in the NFL. He has sabotaged his Charger team by this move he did out of hubris that any logical person would scoff at as franchise suicide. He has only one option to save himself from a disaster of his own doing…find the money to pay the charismatic coach who generates loads of interest by his magnetic persona. Jim is a rock star who just happens to be an elite coach who specializes in restoring moribund football teams to former glory, or the heights of the elite they have never attained before. By the latest report I saw…it’s down to picking a GM in sync with Jim, coaching staff, and analytics dept staff. Somehow Spanos found the money to hire a top coach…just wondering which bank would loan that guy money considering his reputation, lack of wealth generating income, and the fact that even a top 5 Chargers team that has won the Superbowl…LA is still LA. It’s not like Philadelphia, where the Eagles, Phillies, and 76ers are the ingrained in the daily culture like coffee in the morning…our teams are a religion here…and all people talk about every day..even in the off season.
I’m sure plenty here will confirm that LA is the total opposite, except with Dodger Baseball and to a lesser extent, the Lakers. I have HAD to be in LA a lot..had because I was there for business and just not a fan of the city. I’m used to living in cities that date back to the precolonial era, or in the case of Detroit, was once the richest city in the world and IS the Art Deco capital of the world…give those awful mayors and city councils credit, no matter how bad things got, they preserved all of those buildings and other Art Deco treasures…like the train station..,that will once again radiate in their glory of a style of art and architecture created by masters when Detroit reaches a full recovery as a 21st century city with its soul firmly rooted in the late 19th and 20th centuries. LA has no history..no aesthetic..no charm other than Venice Beach aka Dogtown..the rest of La looks like one giant strip mall. I much prefer San Diego..that has character if not beauty, and San Francisco which people love or loathe. What LA does have is distractions…lots of other things residents in LA care more about than sports that is so ironic, as it’s a top tv market for sports teams just by population numbers only. As for sports fandom? They’re not even a top 15 NFL market. lets say Harbaugh is hired and the Chargers win the Superbowl…the best Spanos can hope for is beating the Clippers in popularity…the Raiders left LA 20 years ago and it’s debatable if the Rams have more LA fans than them. Spanos has no money, the worst stadium deal in the league, he has no hope of creating a sizable permanent fanbase, and even Harbaugh delivering the trophy won’t do a thing to save him.
That being said, I don’t think Jim cares a rat’s ass about any of that. The chase..running the gauntlet..proving his many haters wrong..yet again proving his old school beliefs coupled with his lack of ego as a coach..his ability to self-evaluate and has the flexibility to elimInate his program‘s dysfunction by flipping direction 180 degrees on the run and get back on the rails quickly is his gift. Jim cares about his players first, and his process. The LA press is going to find that out real quick. He could not care less about fixing Spano’s Greek Tragedy errors or major issues. He cares about how fast they can get out of the lake of fire salary cap hell the chargers are burning in the last few years, he cares about changing from being a top 5 oldest team to becoming a top 5 youngest squad by 2025. He cares about football in the abstract..purely about the journey to winning. If the Chargers think Harbaugh will be there long term, they’re mistaken. He’ll put a team around Herbert running a ground attack heavy play action offense that’ll win the SB in 4 years tops, then he will leave for the next challenge. He’s leaving Michigan batting 1.000..did it all in 9 years. If it wasn’t Michigan, he would have left after 2021. He’s leaving the Program in excellent shape for success as long as they keep the culture intact. I’ll be cheering for the Chargers next season. That is if Spanos’ offer is anywhere close to Michigan’s. I hear Spanos made a “substantial offer”, which I translate to mean he came nowhere near Michigan’s offer…so it’s gonna come down to if losing the SB to John would drive him to take 30-40 million less to take a pro job. I know what I would do. But I’ve come to understand that, when it comes to Jim, logic does not always apply.
On Embiid: he was unstoppable last night on the way to 70 - 15 -5..only Wilt Chamberlai has had a game like that, but Embiid did it in 38 minutes. He’s the most athletic, best scorer with any shot in his bag in the NBA this season. For a 7ft 300lb man, he moves like a gazelle. I don’t even think Shaq could have stopped him. Remember about ten years ago the future of the NBA was “Positionless basketball“ and guards were dominating the NBA? My how things have changed with centers like Embiid and jokic, and power forwards like Kwai, Giannis, Tatum, Edwards, Luka, KD, Chet, and others are dominating the league..and the guards have become less of factor to the game, and I haven’t heard the term “Positionless Basketball“ in years. What an age we live in where offense are run through highly skilled dominant centers just a decade later.
Again…Embiid played the greatest game I’ve seen a 7ft 300lb guy ever play..he was like a cross between Kobe and Akeem with a bit of Dr J in him last night. They just got to keep him from that freak injury he gets every year just as the playoffs start this season.
