Sherrone Moore

Sherrone oozed the "it" yesterday in a way I haven't seen.

This game was not too big for him. It started with his press conference at the beginning of the week. For me, that was the first moment I started thinking we could win. It wasn't bravado, but rather a deep confidence in coaches and players.

The way SM led them into that wretched place. No wavering or bravado. Just dialed in confidence. Throughout the whole game his leadership presence on the sidelines was STRONG. At times playful. Shooting the arrow at Ryan Day after the game-winning FG was priceless. His post-game interview was the best. Coach is confident to show his deep love for his players. His post-game presser was even better. Especially his answer to the question about the post-game drama.

It's so fun to watch SM live large in the largest moments (unlike 3rd Base). The great coaches/leaders figure it out.

That win might be my all-time favorite Buckeye win. SM gets a massive amount of the credit.

Some thoughts about game yesterday and future . . .

The Game

- Defense played great. OSU had to earn everything they got. No big plays (nor do I recall any guys running alone deep where Howard simply missed the throw). Shut down the run game. Never quit. Good tackling.
- Some say that Day was trying to win a certain way (by running the ball) that was out of character. Perhaps, I'm not sure. But I think part of it is that he didn't really trust Howard (in terms of his accuracy and making mistakes) and feared our pass rush. And this is true especially after Howard almost got knocked out. And really, this looked to be the case. Howard threw 2 picks and almost threw 2 more (despite not being in a game where OSU was down). Howard is also not a guy that really is going to beat you with his legs.
- Can't believe OSU never got called with an offensive holding. Then again we never did either. I guess the refs were just letting them play.
- I thought we got too conservative with the offensive play calling. I would have liked to see us mix in a few more passes - especially on first down.
- I thought the call to throw the ball into the end zone (on the INT) was great. It looked like Warren just missed the throw. But based on Moore's comments, it's possible that Hansen didn't run the route right. I think this probably why we didn't throw more . . . Warren is just a bit erratic with his throwing. He has a good arm and his throws look very good at times but he does have a tendency to throw picks.
- All the credit in the world to Zvada - he's a machine. But let's also give credit to the kick team in general - long snapper, line, holder. They were perfect yesterday.
- Mullings is a machine. IMO, he has not been 100 percent for much of the 2nd half of the season. He has taken a pounding. But he is always fighting for yards and never fumbles.
- Offensive line played good enough. No sacks. Not many negative rushing plays (although even our run calls - which tended to be right up the middle - protected against this possibility).
- If I'm an OSU fan, I wouldn't have felt good about the hiring of Chip Kelly. I don't like one head coach (DaY0 hiring a coordinator (Kelly) who has a better history as a head coach than the head coach. It feels like a pressure hire and not necessarily a good chemistry hire.

The Future

- People in general to push for out with the old and in with the new. To me, this demonstrates a lack of patience and emotional decision making. For example, look at OSU. Why the hell is Howard the QB when you could have had a more experienced McCord back - and a guy that was pretty good last year??? There is something to be said for continuity in your program. I think this is something that Harbaugh understood . . . and hopefully Moore does as well.
- With that said, before I get too focused on the portal, I'm looking to bring back guys from THIS YEAR'S team before expressly or implicitly showing them the door. Young football players improve - whether in season or between seasons. Our staff will have a better sense of the character, talent, and work ethic of players on this year's team vs. guys from other teams.
- I think it is a delicate balancing act about how to handle NIL money, maintaining continuity on your roster, bringing in transfers, and being careful about avoiding inequity on the roster (e.g., young or unproven players getting lots of money while veteran players get much less). Raw talent is far from everything when it comes to winning. The best coaches and programs will learn how to deal with this. We will see how Moore does.
- Everyone is in a rush to replace Campbell. I'm not sure this will happen. He really didn't have much to work with this year. It's tough to have much of an offense without a solid/dependable QB, a young/inexperienced/often banged up offensive line, and really not wide receiver playmakers. I know people complain about his play calling but the reality is, every game plan that he comes up with is approved by Moore.
- I worry about going after a guy like McCulley. Why did he leave the IU team . . . a team having a great season and that should be in the playoffs?
- Team never quit this year and that portends well for Moore and the future.

A couple observations

I don’t post as often as I previously did but since this is probably Michigan’s biggest upset since 1969, I thought I would give it a try.

I was struck by how often OSU players became demonstrative towards the fans at the end of a play. They would arise from ground and make exaggerated arm gestures and yell towards the crowd. It was a very obvious, “look at me move” intended to make the crowd louder. It happened on nearly every play in the first half and most in the second. It occurred so often, it lost its effect. The crowd began to tune it out. It seemed scripted and less than genuine emotion to me. The exuberance was odd and striking.

The Buckeye offensive and defensive lines seemed gassed at the end of the game. Close up of their faces showed significant fatigue. The pounding of Michigan took its toll and showed in the fourth quarter. It begins with winter lifting and conditioning—it pays dividends in the Fall.

An unranked Michigan team beats #2 OSU. In Columbus. Imagine that!!! Great day.

Bruce Feldman drops Tulane OC Joe Craddock as potential Michigan OC

I can't find the video, but Scott Bell referenced it in the tweet below and I saw it yesterday at some point. Coaches QBs so he would presumably be a straight replacement for Kirk Campbell.

Some other names that I've seen speculated by fans or insiders for OC: Brennan Marion, Dan Mullen, Joe Moorhead, Kevin Wilson, Jason Candle

Campbell may have been Peter principled as an OC, but if he doesn't have hard feelings about the possibility of a demotion, I would invite him to stay in the fold as an analyst. Or maybe even some kind of assistant GM position to Magee where we could better leverage his recruiting skill and experience. Speaking of analysts, I looked up the athletic department directory to see what our off-field analyst and staff looks like. I didn't focus at all on the recruiting staff, but more on the analyst positions which can be extensions of the coaching staff, especially as the NCAA loosened restrictions on analysts coaching players in practice. You hear about experienced coaches retiring or going to the NFL because they're not on board with constantly recruiting their own roster or NIL fundraising, and those kinds of experienced coaches would be great targets for these analyst positions that can't go on the road to recruit. Anyway, this was the list of analysts as best as I could tell (with positions based on what they put on social media, what was in the directory, or guessed by me based on their background). I'll be curious to see how we might flesh out that analyst staff with more experienced coaches (think Juan Castillo and Doug Mallory from past years):

Senior Offensive Analyst, Brett Ingalls
Analyst/TE, Jack Clark
Analyst/OL, Nick Gilbert
Offensive Analyst (QB/WR), Josh Sinagoga
GA/WR (GA period expiring), Andrew Goodrich
GA/OL, Nicholas Rossiello

Defensive Analyst (DB), Lionel Stokes
Analyst (Defense, LB/Edges?), Kevin Wilkins
Defensive Analyst (LB?), LaTroy Lewis
Jr Defensive Analyst, Anthony Marciano
GA/DBs?, Brad Hawkins
GA/Edges?, Pernell McPhee

Special Teams Analyst, Garrett Clawson
Special Teams Analyst, Grant Kurzner

Some reminders

I wasn't expecting a win today, I didn't think we could score enough points.

But since the Oregon game, the D has been really good; I knew we could hold them below their average in points. I never dreamed we would hold them to ten points. I

Wink's side of the ball has improved a ton over the season. Considering that there was no Rod Moore for the season, no Will for most of the season, and a host of other injuries, what they did today is nothing short of remarkable. TEN points! That number will haunt Ryan Day for a long time.

On offense, they got the job done without Loveland and Dono. Davis didn't have his best game, and the two turnovers hurt, but this team pulled together. Once again, in the fourth quarter, when the game was on the line, the much-maligned O-line showed up. They began to move people, and Mullings did Mullings things. We had the ball for 13 minutes in the fourth quarter. Wow! Overall, we had the possession advantage 34-26 minutes. Double wow!

Zvada is $$. His two makes compared to OSU's two misses were the difference.

We beat the Buckeyes on the road for the second time in a row after not winning there for almost two decades. We did it missing, arguably, our four best players.

We out-coached, out-hit, out-executed, and outplayed them. This was a monster win for this program.

I will sleep well. Go Blue!

Zvada has been heroic
