It's Good News Wednesday! 2-21-24

I'm excited to see what the new staff can do. I'm ready to hear the stories of a rookie who came out of nowhere and will dominate in the fall. I won't believe that, but it's part of the spring training traditions. :)

Last week, I was sick, so I went to the doctor. They tested me and found out I had Influenza A. They framed it as good news, bad news. The Good news is I didn't have COVID-19; the bad news is I had the Flu.

Honestly, I thought, you people are messed up. Covid or the Flu is not good news. I've had both. They both stink and were about the same in my case. The GOOD NEWS is I'm past it. I'm fit, good lookin, and back to my life. ;-)

I do have to find time for a make-up date for being sick on Valentine's Day. Good duty if you ask me.

Yesterday was my little brother's birthday.

What's your good news?

Coaching hires are a gamble

Other than Jim Harbaugh, I have taken a wait-and-see attitude on coaching hires.

Over the years, we have all seen can't-miss hires fall flat on their face, and gambles turn into best hires ever. I'm not just talking about Michigan.

Sometimes, it's a great coach in a bad fit. Sometimes, the spotlight is too big. There are a number of reasons things don't work out. I remember when TX hired Charlie Strong. I thought that was a great hire until it wasn't.

Sherrone is going to do fine. I'm hoping that JH has done a good job of teaching him what he needs to know, and Michigan will give him plenty of time to make the program his own.

The tricky part for me is Juwan. Let me state up front that I know far less about basketball than football and even less than that about basketball coaching. I know that I wanted Howard to succeed at Michigan, and I'm saddened by what's become an unexpected crisis for our basketball program. It's becoming painfully obvious that JH will more than likely be asked to leave after the season, and great basketball coaches are not low-hanging fruit. In retrospect, John Beilein was a true gem.

I hope we find the right guy, but I must confess my confidence in our AD is not at an all-time high.

Either way, it looks like we will start the fall sports with two new HCs at our two biggest sports.

Just looking at the 2024 recruiting class again...

...that class is LOADED! 18 4 stars.

Many point to top 100 recruits as a bench mark. At one point last year Michigan had 6 top 100 recruits according to rankings. Then many even in the top 250 fell a little in the rankings.

I'm always curious how much a difference there is in a kid ranked #50 vs #250 at the same position. Usually it comes down to how many camps they go to.

Any other thoughts?
