Dan Hurley's Recruiting Wisdom

From today's USA Today by Steve Borelli...

Quotes from Dan Hurley:

“We spend a lot of time really focusing on the parents,” Hurley said. “Are they gonna be fans of their son or are they gonna be parents? Are they going to hold them accountable, have an expectation that, when something goes wrong, that it’s not the coach’s fault. That their son’s gotta work harder, he’s gotta do more, he’s gotta earn his role?

“When you talk to the parents in the recruiting process, are they constantly complaining about the coaches after a bad game or are they sending you a text or are you having a conversation where their son has gotta do more, he’s gotta player harder, he’s gotta work on his skills. They tell on themselves. They drop hints, and (if) you’ve got the wrong type of people in that inner circle around your players, they’ll sink your program.”

I have a feeling this is also the way Coach Harbaugh thought about recruiting the entire family.

Just finished his sophomore year at Miami Ohio and has entered the portal with two years left, former Ann Arbor basketball player of the year for Ann Arbor Huron and was coached by Waleed Samaha who is a local HS basketball legend in the area.

Kid is 6'7 and would be a perfect wing target if May is interested in him!

Recruiting 2026 DB DeMari Clemons 'can't wait' for spring game visit to Michigan

"I have a chance to watch the national champions live in a spring game— how good is that?"

2026 DB DeMari Clemons previews his upcoming spring game visit to Michigan, gives his thoughts on the Wolverines' program, and more:

Insider Intel: Latest on weekend basketball visitors

It’s a busy weekend for Dusty May and the basketball program when it comes to visits, as both the transfer portal and recruiting cycle will be represented on campus this weekend.

Below is who plans to visit and the latest intel we’ve been able to gather.

Vlad Goldin, FAU: Probably the most confident about all the visitors that this is going to get done for Michigan. He will be coming in as a grad transfer so there won’t be any issues after the fact. I’m not sure what the timeline looks like but this one all but seems like a formality at this point.

Danny Wolf, Yale: There is still confidence that Michigan is the team to beat, I can’t sit here and say it’s a done deal but this visit could go a long way with Michigan’s chances here. Programs like Indiana and North Carolina are pushing hard.

Justin Pippen, 2024 CG: Last name speaks for itself with bloodlines, his name has popped up as a bit of a surprise name that May has gotten involved with. While he has his fair share of suitors, the Wolverines could certainly trend in the right direction here with a strong visit.

Insider Spring Intel: Final notes

With the team set to take the field next week for the spring game, this week will be the final intel piece we do this spring as you all can watch the team perform and see for yourself next week. My job here is done 😂

Michigan will be doing a spring game draft again and will be running the event like a full game like the last handful of years.

Here are some final quick notes.

- After doing some asking around, it's becoming clear that Josh Prebe is the team's best offensive lineman right now. Not a slight on anyone else as Greg Crippen is right there. Prebe has had a really solid camp.
- Zeke Berry is still rotating between nickel and safety and will continue to do so moving forward. However, as of late, he has been playing a lot of free safety.
- The DB pairings so far are as follows: Makari Paige and Berry at safety, Will Johnson and Ja'Den McBurrows is getting run, DJ Waller also getting plenty of time.
- A reminder that Quinten Johnson is not participating in spring ball yet as he's not officially enrolled in classes yet. He will be with the team full-time once that happens. His absence has allowed guys like Berry to get plenty of reps.
- Defense continues to get praise but must be taken with a grain of salt as most of the practices the players aren't tackling to the ground to avoid unnecessary injuries.
- Derrick Moore continues to receive praise for the work he's done this spring, have been told he had a very strong few weeks.
- Coaches have made it a point to drive the point home of leadership. They want to see leaders emerge after losing so many from last year. I didn't take this as a negative, as many players have taken on larger roles like Will Johnson, Rod Moore and Donovan Edwards to name a few. I took it as having more vocal leaders, the better, so they want a few more people to use their voice.

- As for health, Rod Moore is the only player I am aware of who has anything serious.

Of course, if anything pops up between now and the spring game I will let you all know.
