Baseball Michigan grabs an in-state kid!

Eureka!

Michigan grabbed an in-state 2024 who had options and gives U-M a guy with ace upside & two-way ability.

Hill is 6-4, plays football & basketball, can hit & plays the corner OF well with a plus arm.

He has a ton of pitchability on the bump with a funky delivery he hides well. Often leaves hitters off-balance & guessing. Rolls out a FB/SL/CB/CH mix that overlays at a high level.

Nobody shut down the OLSM lineup — 44-0 in 2022 & 87-1 since March 2021 — like Hill did in the 2022 state final.

As a junior against the best team in MHSAA history — regardless of sport — here was his line:

6 innings
3 hits
1 earned run
1 walk
9 strikeouts

Here’s the tape from that game:

Easily the best in-state pickup from Tracy Smith so far — which isn’t saying much, given the lack thereof. However, Hill, independently, is a pickup that’ll pay off long-term.

Can he enroll early? They need pitching NOW.

A very scary and unsustainable stat

We have had 8 fumbles and have lost only 1.

JJ has had a few bonehead plays that were fumbles.

That iowa one that Edwards ran and recovered.

Does anyone seriously think we'd recover that one against msu.

A play like the Edwards fumble that an OL happened to turn around and recover is basically luck.

The turnover fortune tends to disappear when we play msu.

Last year we tempted fate after JJ fumbled and it rolled out of bounds.

And 2 plays later. Yep. Corum running without the ball is burned into my memory.

Where do we stand...

Now that the NCAA clarified some rules around NIL, which appear to legitimize some of the gray area UM was wary of playing in, what are the next steps?

Are the hurdles cleared for the collective discussion to move forward and actually start getting traction?

Are there other areas that we can now pursue with the clarifications from the NCAA?

And lastly, what's a realistic timeline to begin seeing real changes?

Touchdowns, not field goals

I feel strongly that’s what this game comes down to for UM. Almost let it bite us last week. We know UM can move the ball against Sparty; however, UM can’t leave points on the field and expect to get them back like it did last week.

For one, UM has among the lowest red zone scoring rates in the country while MSU‘s O has one of the highest. (As an aside, that’s true on defense too with UM having one of the worst rates of points against in the red zone while MSU’s D has one of the best). Further, UM has a relatively low possessions per game; it will get pretty uncomfortable for this offense to speed things up if we get behind because they’re scoring 6s while we’re scoring 3s.
