Players to Watch: Washington vs Michigan

Going to be a lot of new names in this National Championship rematch.
Michigan's path to victory includes taking away the deep ball from an experienced QB, locking down a large target at WR, and slowing down the Huskies' version of Josaiah Stewart.

Reminder: This team plays best when their backs are against the wall

The team has heard for the entire week about how lucky they were to escape Minnesota and how Washington will win on Saturday. Like USC, I think you'll see a very inspired effort by the group.

On the other hand, not getting the Washington hype by the media, whose best win is still Eastern Michigan. Yes, they should have beat Rutgers - but does even a close win against Rutgers mean you've turned a corner as a team?

Washington game is very winnable. This team is not great against the run, even when stacking 8 in the box vs. Rutgers. WSU begged them to win their game with two fourth-quarter turnovers and a turnover on downs. UW still couldn't pull it off.

Offensively, they throw for a lot of yards and move the ball well between the 20s. However, they're awful in the red zone and terrible on special teams.

Figure out a way to win field position and sustain some drives on offense to give the defense a rest, and we'll come out with a win. If not, we will probably lose close.

2021, UM 31-Washington 10, & Cade had just 44 yards passing

I knew JJ was 10-18 for 140 yards in the Natty gm, but decided to see what Cade had on Washington in 2021 and was stunned to see Cade passed for only 44 yards, so for those worried about Orji:

1. Every year is different, but we have blown this team out twice and without ever passing for 150 yards or big passing yards

2. JJ was 55% in Natty and Cade was 46% completions in 2021, so passing efficiency never has occured either

3. Even with bludgeoning Wash twice in 2 big games, our QBs never even threw 1 TD pass in either game

4. I don't remember any backlash from our fans in 2021 with Cade's 44 yards on 7-15, but for those concerned with Orji passing, we have not needed big passing games from our QBs in the 2 recent games as our running game dominated in both games.

5. Running game will be the key once again....I have confidence in our guys..

The real growing pains with the staff

We have a young head coach. This is the first time being a head coach. Look at Marcus Freeman at Notre Dame. He's a few few years in and still makes dumb amateur coaching mistakes on the big stage. I think we're going to see that with Sheronne as well.

I know everyone on Twitter is talking about a coaching search, but I'm proud that he's our coach and I want to give him a chance.

We don't like to admit it, but Michigan is a damn hard place to be successful. Look how long it took Jim Harbaugh to truly be successful here.

In terms of coaching staff changes, I would like to see an experienced offensive coordinator come in to help offset Moore.

But we all just need to take a breath. In the first half. It looked like we had improved. Orji's passing was better. And the offensive line was holding up a little bit better than it had previously. We were missing two of our biggest defensive stars and we barely noticed...

Failed to adjust, which I think is a head coaching and experience issue. So everyone take a breath... Go out and touch some grass..

He was obviously pretty pissed after this game. He will do everything in his power to turn it around. This feels a lot like the 2021 team to me in terms of improvement week to week and grinding out close wins

Alex Orji

Orji is doing his best to improve at QB this season and hopefully the pass game and ball security finally clicks for Michigan.

But lets say next season, in camp Jadyn Davis takes over at QB and does a great job, what do we do with Orji?

He'll have 2 more years of eligibility after this season.

Sure, he can be the backup QB and have plays drawn up for him, or maybe we move him to Wide Receiver to take advantage of his 6'3 frame and incredible athleticism.

He played receiver for a couple of years in school and has the athleticism to gain seperation but obviously it takes a lot more than that to be a succesful receiver.

Coaching and QB’s

Sherrone Moore deserved the head coaching job. Culture meant a lot over the last three years. Trying to ride the momentum was smart.

The qb room is below average. Moore and Kirk Campbell deserve the criticism. Having a turnover passer to start and now a qb that can’t pass consistently from the pocket will prevent UM from the playoff unless there’s a change in play.

UM’s portal and recruiting strategy paid off in their championship run. When Brady Hart starts getting bigger upfront offers will UM match? Coming up the top portal qb’s will demand big money. The bag man from barstool is standing by. How much are you and how willing will Michigan be to adjust their core value?
