Hypothetical Joe Cullen staff

Going with the Minter model of a "head coach for defense" who does NOT have a position title

DC- Cullen
DL- Sterling Lucas would be the dream. Within the last two weeks he was bumped to $575k. Let's be honest, nothing about the last 3-4 weeks suggests bidding wars being won. I'll throw out Jason Brooks, asst DL with the Steelers. His father was a longtime Ravens assistant. Jason has some experience in the Baltimore system as well.

LB- A handful of really interesting names here. The most intriguing could be 31 year old Alex Whittingham, Kyle's son. Currently an assistant LB coach with the Chiefs. Rod Wilson, another Chiefs assistant makes sense here too. Cullen has a prior relationship with former UM Asst Brian Jean Mary. He's currently at Tennessee with $665k attached to him. I would rather save the co-DC that he would likely require. Tony Gilbert, 44, was recently let go in Jacksonville at LB and has experience in Cullen's system as well.

CB- Brian Duker, an asst DBs coach with the Lions makes some sense here. There are honestly not a lot of great options that would be widely available. Hopefully Clink remains an option. Archie Collins has ties to Sherrone from their Cemtral Michigan days and would be a lockdown recruiter in Detroit. Currently on Pat Narduzzi's staff at Pitt.

S- If they opt for a name other than Clink or he goes to A2 West, then I would dangle the co-DC tag for NFL options such as Aubrey Pleasant, who could be available after being passed over for two different DC jobs involving his own staff (Rams and Falcons). Other names worthy of the co-DC tag could be former Seahawks assistant and Baltimore vet Roy Anderson. Jordan Kovacs and Cato June are UM-centric names that come to mind at S or LB as well and may be more attainable than some others. Coach Moore and Deon Broomfield from Iowa St quietly exchanged Twitter follows early in the process and he could be someone they target.

2024 season

I'll be the first to say it. I'm not exited for 2024. Harbaugh gone. Herbert gone. Minter gone. Hart likely gone. I just hope we make a bowl game.

Ever since we won the national championship, it's been bad news with coaches leaving. I hope Moore makes some grand slam hires at DC & strength and conditioning coach but I'm not holding my breath.

Insider On Clink and Elston...

If you've been paying attention, you would know that Harbaugh has been in pursuit of both Steve Clinkscale and Mike Elston since his departure to Los Angeles. Both have raises and offers in hand but Sherrone Moore is working to keep them both.

Moore is also offering raises to both, as he will be doing for practically every member of the staff. A decision won't be coming down to money.

Here's where I am failing to connect the dots: If playcalling responsibilities were THAT important, why haven't both of them gone to Los Angeles already? It's clear that Moore is on the hunt for a DC with experience in the role and scheme. He is clearly looking around at those who aren't named Elston and Clinkscale.

So why is Elston and Clink still working? Why haven't they jumped at Harbaugh's offer?

Unless there's some sort of belief that Moore will circle back to you if he strikes out with multiple guys? I find it odd that they're still here if an offer from LA is so enticing (which I don't know if it truly is).

Here's where I am: Both are in Ann Arbor working and carrying on their duties. Until they stop doing that, that's when I will be concerned.

Right now, I have no reason to believe both are leaning toward leaving and have received zero intel to suggest they're gone. Could it happen? Of course, but both guys are currently working and going on like they are members of the staff.

Should you be concerned that Harbaugh is making a push? It would be silly not to be concerned but I am not ready to waive the white flag and say they're both gone, at least not yet. Who knows, new info could come out that makes all my points totally debunked but this is where we are.

Could it be posturing?

Insider Mike Hart status check...

As of this writing, I think things are trending toward Mike Hart NOT being retained by Michigan.

Michigan has been offering plenty of 25 and 26 running backs and none of them have mentioned being offered by Hart by name, I don't think that's a coincidence. Recruiting efforts would need to pick up substantially if he were to come back.

RIP Toby Keith

He seemed to be a great dude by all accounts. Cancer is the worst!

Country music icon Toby Keith has died, his official website and social media accounts said early Tuesday, 18 months after he revealed he had stomach cancer.

He was 62.

The "Should've Been a Cowboy" singer died Monday night surrounded by his family, a short statement said. "He fought his fight with grace and courage," it added.
