Those Damned ‘Domers...

...are strutting over Brian Kelly’s third undefeated regular season, the second perfect regular season in the last three in his eleven-year career as the Irish head coach Plus they will likely be selected for the playoffs for the second time since a Committee has selected the semi finalists. They go on to pat themselves on the back for achieving those accomplishments with recruiting classes seldom as good as Michigan’s, paying Kelly less than a quarter of what we pay Harbaugh, and with a first-year offensive coordinator and a third-year defensive coordinator, both in their first jobs as coordinators.

What can we say other than to agree that Brian Kelly is one of the best college head coaches in the country. He clearly has a system and set of program values that have proven repeatable and engender great loyalty of his players to Notre Dame and to each other. The frequency of players who choose to leave early for the NFL or transfer is admirable.

Those who stay will be champions used to be a Michigan saying, but not any more. Too bad. That seems so fundamental to the creation of a top program. Thinking about it, not many players leave early from Alabama or Clemson either.

I Thought I’d Share…

… my response to a former ‘Domer colleague who sent me yet another ‘Domer-centric article describing how they would thrive with continued independence.

“Another article from a Notre Dame-centric publication, I’m sure.

Let’s get something straight. My feelings regarding the Big Ten considering Notre Dame for membership are just as strong as yours desiring continued independence in football.. I definitely DO NOT want Notre Dame as a member of the Big Ten Conference!

I can think of no particular benefit athletically, academically or financially to your membership. The conference can do much better by creating a membership of strong, mutually-supportive, intersectional universities that are more than a small, religious-based, liberal arts college in an Indiana cornfield.

Actually, I would prefer that the Big Ten simply cooperate with your desires for independence and take Notre Dame off our schedules in all sports altogether.

If the realignment of college sports develops as I believe it will, my desire will be satisfied. I will take great pleasure in watching your athletic programs wither financially and competitively.

Bo Schembechler said it best when the subject of your membership in the Big Ten came up on his watch..,.

“To Hell with Notre Dame!”

Recruiting Michigan to receive OV from No. 24 prospect in 2025

Michigan is set to get one of four official visits from talented 2025 OLB Nathaniel Owusu-Boateng on June 21.

Notre Dame, Ohio State and USC will receive the others.

Why did Michigan get the OV? This quote via our Notre Dame site.

“Going up to Michigan, talking to Coach Wink, their DC, talking to Coach BJ. Me and Coach BJ were talking while he was at Tennessee, so just picking that relationship up when he went over to Michigan. It just carried on. Just seeing that development piece, talking to their strength and conditioning coaches, talking to everybody on the staff, I felt like a priority there. Knowing that they’re in the Big Ten, they compete for national championships and they just won one, that made me want to go ahead and schedule an OV there.”

NCAA - M softball opens vs Kentucky

M softball opens as the #3 seed in the region vs Kentucky on Friday May 17th in Stillwater Oklahoma where Oklahom State ranked #5 is the host school.

Other B1G Schools -

Northwestern opens as 2nd seed in the Texas (#1 seed overall) region vs St Francis (PA).

Penn State opens as the #4 seed in the TAM region facing #16 overall Texas A&M.

Indiana opens as the #3 seed in the Missouri (Columbia MO) region and faces future B1G opponent Washington.

Nebraska was not selected.

Big Ten baseball - M chances

OK...

Here's the current standings...

Illinois 15 -6
Nebraska 14 - 7
Purdue 13-8
Indiana 13-8
Michigan 13-8

M is pretty well assured of making the B1G Tourney, but needs a win or a loss by either Maryland, OSU or MSU) to be guaranteed a position. Seedings are up for grabs, as is the regular season championship. Only top 8 teams make it.
three teams (Maryland, OSU & MSU) are tied at 10-11 and only 2 will get in.
Iowa finished at 14-10, they are assured in.

Illinois plays a 3 game series at Purdue starting Thursday.
Nebraska plays a 3 game series at MSU starting Thursday
Michigan plays a 3 game series at IU starting Thursday.

The best M can do is tie for the Championship. Here's how,
M needs to sweep IU, then Illinois needs to lose at least 2 games. If Purdue and Michigan sweep, they would be tied. if Illinois wins 1 with a Michigan sweep, Illinois and Michigan would be tied.
If Illinois loses 2 and Nebraska sweeps MSU, then Nebraska would win the conference.

Lets hope for good results in Bloomington this weekend.

Fun Topic OT: The Best Songs About Cars

I was on one of the secret forums that mature hot rod guys have created after the official Hot Rod Magazine forum and other mainstream car culture websites devolved into the usual trolling and infantile posts that have ruined so many other websites of all kinds, including the exodus TOS that so many of our members site defected to, and found out it was nothing but a Twitter troll haven from it’s inception. It’s an unofficial rule at this hot rodder forum that if you’re lucky enough to find it and become a member, you absolutely do not talk about it openly online. It’s an oasis of sanity, much like The Den is, and they want to keep it that way.

Instead of OT posts, the have a General Discussion section where the only topics off-limits are what you’d expect..absolutely no posts about politics or religion. It’s a really cool setup that doesn’t annoy members who are there strictly for car topics and allows posters like me that are always tangentially thinking that takes us far off topic, or just bring a lot of OT posts during the off season. In the past, members here used to be more open to OT posts, but there has been a growing intolerance that has made other Den members who used to make OT posts quit altogether, and give the most hardcore OT posters like me, I may be the only one left that habitually makes them at a consistent rate, real pause before I post an OT topic. I haven’t made an “Argus Story” post in quite awhile due to the increasing negative feedback, despite the fact that I get a considerably larger amount of messages and thread comments from Den members that they loved them. I don’t know what Rivals rules are as to creating a separate General Discussion section of the MBR platform, but I feel it would be a positive addition to have one.

Anyway, last night I joined a thread about “The Best Songs About Cars” and it turned out to be pretty amazing. The only rule is it had to be about a specific car or car maker as the main subject of the song, rather than just a lyric in a song like Joe Walsh’s reference to his Maserati in his song “Life’s been Good”.

Of course, being the elitist music snob that I am, I came up with 2 songs that spurred a lot of responses.

The first is from the underground hard rock band Clutch. I’ve talked to Neil Fallon innumerable times over the years, and if you’re a fan, then you know from his lyrics that he’s extremely intelligent and has expert level knowledge about almost any topic. But when we did cross paths, all we talked about were cars. Neil is a dedicated car guy and noted speed demon, which is difficult to do living in Virginia. The State Police there are notorious for their fetish of nailing car guys hard with the tickets for driving even 5 miles over the limit. I know this from experience. This song entitled “Spacegrass” is about driving in space in a 1973 Dodge Swinger, though the Ford Galaxie 500 is also referenced. I can affirm that driving late at night with this song blasting WILL make you punch the accelerator to the floor…

The one that really blew up the comments was from Public Enemy’s first album “Yo! Bum rush the Show!” entitled “You’re gonna get yours”, which was a fantastic ode to Chuck D’s Oldsmobile 98. It’s an outrageous jam all about his legendary whip none of the members there had never heard before, and I think I won the thread with it..

Had so much fun watching all the song videos about car songs I didn’t know existed, and I thought I’d bring it here for The Den to see what you guys can come up with. So let’s see your favorite car song videos guys. There is nothing going on until the Phillies game and I’m bored. Have at it!
