The portal was a bust for the football team this year

The main benefit of the portal is to address needs with players who have experience, but overall it hasn't been good compared to years' past.
  • Barham: He's been serviceable but definitely isn't living up to the hype
  • Mangham: Non factor
  • Amir Hall: He's not Josh Wallace
  • Ricky Johnson: Who?
  • W. Walker: Non factor
  • A. Walker: Non factor
  • Priebe: He should've been the standout on this line and he's just been so-so
  • Charleston: Basically another fullback
  • Zvada: the one shining star in this portal class

I get it, they got a late start etc etc but you can't strike out on so many kids in positions of need. A lot of this could be attributed to coaching but some of these additions were head scratchers to begin with.

Football Michigan's Bryce Underwood 'willing to do whatever it takes' to be the best

On Wednesday, Bryce Underwood, the nation's No. 1 QB in the class of 2025, officially signed to play at Michigan.

Underwood explains what ultimately brought him to Ann Arbor, whether he expects to be the starter next fall, and more:

Recruiting Got some clarification on visit dates for December….

I was under the impression the month of December had a mix of dead and quiet periods that made it for recruits unable to visit.

While it’s somewhat truthful, the dates aren’t as strict as I thought.

December 2-8, 2024

December 23, 2024 – Jan. 5, 2025

Jan. 1-5, 2025; Quiet period for two- and four-year college transfer prospective student-athletes who intend to enroll midyear.

January 13-15, 2025

Dead periods.

So, yes, Michigan can hosts recruits this month, including Ty Haywood, IF he wanted to.

I do expect Michigan to try to expand the 2025 class.

Looking ahead.

College football is changing. Some of it is okay with me, but a lot of it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

My biggest frustration is that the NCAA is the worst organization on the planet. It is focused on the wrong things at the wrong time, and I hate the Wild West feel of the last few years.

While we have benefited from both the portal and the NIL at one time or another, they are not my favorite football revelations.

That said, the last two weeks have been the best of the season. The big win over OSU and the recruiting class are huge wins for the program and somewhat of a reset from a frustrating season.

There is a whole subculture that thrives on negativity. With the stunning Bryce Underwood flip and the great class coming in, what in the world will these folks do? I'm sure they will turn their guns into something to complain about, but today is not their day.

It would appear that going forward, Michigan will be fielding teams that are much more equal in talent than we've generally seen this century.

I hope that means we'll regularly be in the national championship hunt. Of course, the Big Ten is more competitive now that the West Coast teams have joined, but that's just football.

Even with the negative elements that I find distasteful, I'm very optimistic and excited about the program's future.

Go Blue!

A few NSD observations

1. This felt “like the old days” in a good way. There was anticipation, a bit of anxiety and whole lot of hitting “refresh” on the computer screen. NSD used to be HUGE for me but in recent years became ho-hum as we already knew our class well in advance and little changed on that day. Not this year it became fun again!

2. Not one recruit from Ohio. When did this happen before??? Ohio kids used to be the backbone of our class. Is this a trend or a one off? Population shifts may factor here.

3. No major surprises today. That’s a good thing. These can be good or bad. I have lived through too many, “I went to bed a Wolverine and woke up a …” than I care to count. Rips your heart out.

4. Superior draft coverage on this site. Both on NSD and leading up to it. Thank you!!’

Buckeye Killers

Buckeye Killer: A Michigan player(s) whose performance contribution in The Game was so significant and profound that without their exemplary individual effort, a Michigan victory was unlikely or doubtful.

I want this to be a fun thread but please keep the criteria in mind. This is to draw attention to truly extraordinary individual performances. Please feel free to add more. My memory only goes so far back and I wouldn't want to miss anyone from a particular year if you feel they fit the bill.
