Thoughts on last night.....

... There is no quarterback controversy. Love alex...but he couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat last night.

...Davis Warren acquitted himself quite well last night. There were a couple of drops that really hurt him. He left that deep ball short but outside of that he played very well.

Loveland is a stud and will be a 1000 yd receiver.

... Edwards is a notoriously slow starter. Edwards will be better next week.

Mullings is exactly who I thought he was. A big, strong bruising back that can find the hole.

... Defense was lights out against a pretty good offense.

.... Some say will Johnson didn't play very well last night. I think that's fair. However, they are quarterback, managed to drop the couple up passes in the he could never do it again.

... oline/offense woke Up in the fourth quarter, we're very good. Guidice was inconsistent with his pad level and got knocked on his ass on the 3rd and short.

... Didn't see a lot of rotation on the Dline with pierce, Etta or ike, playing a whole hell of a lot. Benny looked good

... This team will take a big leap from week 1 to week 2. My thoughts are they may have been looking ahead to texas and may have gotten caught up in reading their own press.

... Lastly, we have become spoiled as a fan base and when we start b******* about winning by twenty points, we need to take a look at ourselves.

... A win is a win. Style points mean absolutely nothing.

Learning from Milroe: Alex Orji and avoiding a Texas letdown

There are interesting similarities between Jalen Milroe and Alex Orji, two physical QBs from Texas replacing legends on their teams.
Jim Harbaugh called Milroe a "polished Orji." Can Orji be a polished Orji early and avoid the week 2 loss to Texas?

Underestimating Warren?

Trust me, I thought and believed that this was going to be Orji who ended up being the starter. But with the rumors and reports I decided to sit back and look at Warren a bit more as like many I kind of wrote him off after the rough showing last year early on even though I was actually pretty high on him before that.

A few things to remember

- in the spring of 22' he was the #2 all of spring and summer with JJ coming back from injury. That led to him being the #2 behind JJ all year after Cade lost the starting job and got hurt (I think even without the injury Warren possibly takes the 2 spot from Cade)

- I believe Warren was the #2 all of the 23' spring, summer and heading into the fall but injury set him back and showed when he got time in the early season.

Going all the way back to the spring game and Hawaii game of 22' I always though he showed a lot of the type of play style and ability as JJ. The question was always could he handle the mental stuff when it actually mattered not just in mob up duty.

I rewatched the highlights below of the past few spring games and his time in 22' and man I can see a lot of JJ in his style and ability. So I know for me at least that I underestimated him and moved on to quickly after a pour showing last year (didnt know he was hurt at the time) and maybe got to confident in Orji truly being the best option.

Perfect role for Dono

Love Dono and all the big plays he’s made for Michigan over the years couldn’t help but think when I was watching the game last night could our coaching staff take a page out of Shannahan’s and the 49ers book and give him more of a Debo Samuels role. 10-15touches a game from end arounds, screens, quick game, etc. I’m no football coach but I think that would create a matchup nightmare, Mullings in the backfield, Loveland moving around then you have to account for Dono. I know this is real life and not a video game but as Urban Meyer used to say you have to find a way to get your 11 best players on the field at all times and call your game around that.

Next week

We will be able to run on Texas. The key will be to extend our drives and keep their quarterbacks on the bench. As odd as the rotations were last night, our staff tried different combinations to see what worked. I think the O-line will look much better, and I expect to see a steady diet of Mullings.

One thing is for sure: Their QBs won't miss players like the Fresno kid. We looked vulnerable to the mid-range pass over the middle. As good as the D played (and they played very well), they must be even better next week.

I'm thrilled we didn't open the season with TX and some Capital One neutral field. An opening game, a week to improve, and being at home are all advantages for us. I hope it's enough.

Feel better after watching Jansen

On Inside Michigan Football. He acknowledged the tight timing re Texas to get better lol but said most all the mistakes he saw are easily corrected. Said film review with the coaches will bring the ah ha moments. Footwork and other issues, game speed for some of the guys. He expects improvement next week (will it be enough? 🤔 I’m an optimist!). Showed some good blocking by Donovan and Colston. Lots of defensive highlights and Mullings highlights obviously. Happy with the improvement as the game went on. Commented you can’t have run every time with Orji (but what a great fake on that one run) and on the need for the WRs to step up. I love Jansenvision!
