My greatest fear.

We don't get better. What we saw today is what we will see for the rest of the season.

The biggest concern for me is not the butt-whooping we took today. They were better in every facet. The biggest concern is the unforced errors we committed. We just haven't seen that in the last three years. It was remarkable that we saw mistake after mistake all day long.

So far, Moore has proclaimed that these things are fixable. I honestly believe this team was unprepared for the stress they were under today. That is on the staff. They had no plan B. That is on the staff. The play calling on both sides of the ball was abysmal. That is on the staff.

The next two games will set the tone for the rest of the season. Today was not a conference loss. Today is not the end unless we continue to be who we have seen this year.

We MUST establish a run game. To me, that means Mullings has to start at RB. We can't depend on the pass-first option with an inexperienced Davis at the helm.
We MUST find cohesiveness in our D backfield. Today, they looked like Keystone cops back there.
We MUST stop the turnovers. Unforced errors, like we saw today, are game-changers.
We MUST clean up the penalties. Zero tolerance for penalties.

Will Moore be the disciplinarian this team needs? We'll find out in the next two weeks.

Iowa and Maryland both lose ND also

Going to be a crazy season… Between NIL, the transfer portal conference shifts early big games… I think we’re gonna have a rough season not having a solid QB and running game. Our new coaching staff is stumbling out of the gate with this less talented team.

I think we would’ve benefited from four non-conference games one of the worst years possible for Texas and USC to come in game two and four this year.

Spartys QB through some interceptions today and he was rough on his first start, but he’s mobile and he was very accurate on his long ball today. He’s the kind of mobile QB that gives us trouble.

Early read on Moore & Co.

Early take on Moore & Co. is not good.

Yes it's very early on but this team is not playing fundamentally sound football.

The coaching staff grossly misread our QB room. It's inexcusable to not take a swing at the transfer portal coming off a National Championship with such a lousy QB room.

We could've certainly landed someone better than Warren/Orji.

It's a fatal error for this season. It's inexcusable.

There needs to be a lot of learning and iterating in Ann Arbor across the board, very fast!

A few thoughts as the Texas game winds down

Michigan’s national title this year bought me five years of goodwill towards the program. In other words, I am not going to get upset over the next five years, irrespective of perfirmance.

Today’s performance, or lack thereof, has tested that goodwill, but I’ll hold strong. No expectations on my part, let alone great expectations.

So I’m not gonna get mad, but I can still make some critical analysis. So here goes:

1. My first thought was that things will get worse before they get better, but on second thought I don’t see how they can get worse than what we have thus far seen today.

2. Michigan’s defense is not what we thought it would be. Probably caught the coaching staff off guard as well as they thought the defense would be dominating based on how it performed in practice against what we now know is a putrid offense.

3. Michigan will lose most of their top talent after this season, and there is not a pipeline of elite young talent waiting in the pipeline. No young Will Johnsons, Lovelands, Mason Grahams and Kenneth Grants out there. The days of reloading are over. We will be in the midst of a major rebuild.

4. Why no young talent pipeline, especially after an historic three year run? First, because Harbaugh’s yearly NFL dalliance impacted recruiting. Second, Michigan’s NIL was slow out of the gate and still in catch up mode. Third, the transition to a new staff put us way behind for the 25 class. So we have recruited at about a top 15 level instead of a top 5 level. And that is catching up to us now because……

5. Harbaugh is gone. And so is Herbert. The keys to our player development and team culture in recent years. Or, henceforth known as the “irreplaceables”. Some guys just can’t be replaced. At the end of the day Harbaugh’s enemies got their way and he is no longer at Michigan. Whether that is primarily due to the NCAA, Warde, Jim wanting to win a Super Bowl, or some combination of the above will be subject to debate for many years. Irrespective, the mere fact that he is gone is what now matters.

Based on today, it looks like this team is trending towards somewhere between 6-6 and 8-4. 9-3 would be a pleasant surprise.

I would not be surprised if we hit the portal hard this off-season, especially at QB. I see no answers on the current roster at QB for next season. But the transfer portal won’t get us over the hump. This will be a rebuild, not a retooling.

So for the next five years I will sit back, still root hard for my team, be sad when we lose, and post on what I think Michigan needs to do to be successful. But I won’t expect much. At least not for the next five years. Perhaps by then we will have figured out NIL, revenue sharing and the like. And perhaps by then we will have effective athletic department leadership in place. If not, in five years I will be pissed. Very pissed.

Loveland blames Michigan's own mistakes for loss to Texas

Colston Loveland led the way for Michigan again Saturday, but the mistakes that ultimately cost them against Texas stand out.
According to the star tight end, he and his team must now focus on what's next, starting tomorrow.

Thoughts on the game!!

I didn’t see the game as I was working but from what I’ve heard, OUCH!

First of all, I think Davis deserves a shot. Neither Warren or Orji are the answer. Orji is a RB and Warren, while has a nice story, is not a Big Ten level QB. If you want to win at least 9 games, they have to start him. Having this much ineptitude will not get it done.

Second, the OL play needs drastic improvement. Not being able to push people off the blocks will not get it done either.

Third, we need to be way better at fundamentals. What made last year’s team special is they did the little things right. This year’s team is just not a good team right now.

This is the first major test for Moore. The next two or three games will say a lot. If they look bad the next two games, then we are in for a long season.

We have to get this turned around really fast. That’s all!

God bless and Go Blue!!!

Recruiting

Will either bring this program up again or be the cause of another long championship drought. The 2023 roster was a very unique one and one that won't be replicated with a national championship result anytime soon. Blake Corum even said if NIL was around when he was a recruit he wouldn't have gone to Michigan.
Michigan's got to start landing several five stars per class & develop them like Alabama, Georgia, osu, and Texas(when they have a coach that knows what he's doing) do.

This year will probably be a rough one but hopefully it wakes up the people in power that don't believe we can automatically develop anybody. We need several five stars & top 100 annually to have sustained elite success.

Arkansas State

Need to see a fire under this team next week. Things need to start clicking, need to win it handily. If we let them hang around and don’t burry them until late in the game like Fresno it’s not gonna be pretty in conference play. I know it’s early in the season, I know there’s a lot of inexperience, but it’s what has to be done.

My biggest fear was this season would be a repeat of 2017

Lose several playmakers on defense, the entire OL, all WRs, and lack clear talent at QB. The one thing that feels even worse than the 2017 season is that the schedule is harder and our head coach isn’t Jim Harbaugh. This is going to be a rough season and if this coaching staff is as junior varsity as they seem right now, a long 2-3 years.
