Gorney's CFB New Coach Hire Grades

Johnny Smith---A+ (el oh el)

Sherrone---B

With Harbaugh off to the NFL, there could be an even bigger opening for the Spartans with in-state talent. Smith has done more with less for a long time.

34-35 record at Oregon State (only two winning seasons), but mmmkayyy

But Michigan is one of the nation’s proudest programs just coming off a title. Can Moore continue that success while also navigating an ongoing NCAA investigation of which we have no idea who inside the building had involvement?

Insider Intel: What we're hearing on Ben Herbert

There continues to be talk about Ben Herbert and what he plans to do, as Jim Harbaugh is trying to assemble his staff in Los Angeles.

There has been some conjecture and discussion about Herbert's immediate moves and I have asked multiple people with knowledge of the situation about what's going on.

This is what we're hearing:

- We HAVE NOT heard that Herbert has informed anyone at Michigan that he's leaving.
- Multiple people feel confident that Herbert plans to stay in Ann Arbor, even with Sherrone Moore discussing on Saturday that he feels 'encouraged' about Herbert staying around. I know Herbert being there isn't the ultimate sign that he's staying but it certainly meant a lot to him.
- On the LA side, someone I spoke with who is joining Jim in LA HAS NOT heard that Herbert is joining the staff as of last night and didn't seem confident that a decision was either on the table or incoming.
- I do expect Harbaugh to put up a fight to bring his guy with him to LA. I'm not sure what LA can offer, or what Harbaugh is telling Herbert, but he is certainly going to do whatever he can. Harbaugh was challenging LA to give him enough money to bring him.

Could Herbert leave? Certainly, that's not off the table, but we have yet to hear anything is imminent.

That could change, of course.

Orji's Instagram... Seems positive

For everyone who's freaking out about the players leaving, 12 hours ago Orji posted the announcement of Herbert leaving with the caption "Hurting"

3 hours ago he posted the announcement of Tress saying "slow is smooth. Smooth is fast"

I've heard strength coaches say that before. If he was that upset about the new strength coach, he wouldn't be reposting the announcement.

Like many of us, they can be upset that Herbert is leaving, but still be comfortable with the new guy...

Insider Intel: Inside a 'very emotional' Monday lift session

Strength and conditioning coach Ben Herbert has informed the Michigan players that he is leaving to go to Los Angeles after a Monday morning lift session.

Here's what we know about what happened:

- Herbert waited until the end of the lift to inform the team he was leaving.
- It was very emotional, as you can all imagine. Tears were shed.
- He said the major reason to leave was to give the NFL a shot, and dip his toes into the NFL waters.
- He said what he needed to say and exited.
- Players are upset.

S&C assistant Justin Tress is taking over the program, however, it's unknown as of this writing whether he has the job full-time or is temporary.

Insider Intel: A new name Sherrone Moore has spoken with...

We've heard that Sherrone Moore has had a conversation with UTSA offensive coordinator Justin Burke for a position on his staff. I don't know how deep the conversation went or what's next, I just know a conversation took place.

The position for which the two spoke is up in the air too. Tight ends coach would make sense if Grant Newsome ends up at offensive line. Most still assume that Kirk Campbell will be bumped up to OC.

Either way, we'll see if anything progresses.

Insider On Mike Elston...

Mike Elston has been subject to rumors about whether he plans to stay in Ann Arbor or follow Jim Harbaugh to Los Angeles.

While it is true that he is coveted in LA, I am not ready to sit here and say it's a foregone conclusion that he will be the latest coach to depart.

He is currently out on the road recruiting with the staff today.

The initial reaction from what I've gotten is that his preference is to stay in Ann Arbor to be with family and that a final decision is expected to come tomorrow.

We'll see what happens, not ready to hit the panic button just yet.

DC candidate accepts NFL job

I am more than ok with this. Whatever my opinion is worth, he was my least favorite of the candidates we have been hearing.
I still think internal, a Ravens guy (Orr/Egorugwu/TBD), or maybe some like Leonhard are the way to go. We'll keep you updated if we hear any more names or news on this front, but I wouldn't be surprised if a name comes out of nowhere, too. Coaches are pretty good at making these moves in the shadows.

“I don't think of Michigan as just one single player or person, I think of Michigan as a brand or machine working together and competing to be the best they can be each week.”
