Welcome to this week’s edition of The Justice Report.
- It’s a massive weekend for many reasons, recruiting certainly being one of them. Numerous visitors will be on hand for Michigan’s game against Ohio State. I’m working on a list to put on the board later this week.
- Among them is Mater Dei (Calif.) five-star CB Domani Jackson whose recruitment has been well documented for ages. As we know, the dad is a Michigan fan and Jackson’s visit may have as much to do with his recruitment as it does his dad wanting to experience The Game, though I believe that narrative is being blown out of proportion. Truthfully, I believe there’s more to this situation than meets the eye. To the eye, Jackson visited Alabama and did what he seemed to have been flirting with for months in decommitting from USC. Michigan could never get him to that ultimate decision. Alabama, it seems, was the straw that broke the camel’s back. It’s been documented. The Tide nailed the visit and there’s no reason to believe they’re not only the perceived favorite but the legitimate one, too. That being said, Josh has documented in his Quick Hitters that Michigan and its NIL staff have something in their back pocket this weekend. Not only is there a large NIL opportunity on the horizon for Jackson in Ann Arbor but also one for his buddy, Michigan’s sole five-star commitment, Grosse Pointe South (Mich.) CB Will Johnson. The two have gone through each of their recruitment’s with the other in the know. Johnson, of course, is making the short trip to visit for The Game. Now, imagine a day where Jackson’s dad witnesses a triumphant victory for the Wolverines over the Buckeyes. Michigan’s NIL plan for Jackson & Johnson is as advantageous as it’s being anticipated to be. And suddenly Michigan -- not Alabama but Michigan -- has a more likely scenario to get a playoff spot … yes, I would rather take Michigan to beat Wisconsin than Alabama to beat Georgia, in this scenario … what happens then? Jackson knows his father’s affinity for U-M. He knows his buddy Will is here and the potential cornerback tandem they would form could be generational. He’s been vocal ... he wants to see Michigan succeed like many high-profile recruits like him. Well, here it is. The moment, the opportunity to do exactly that. I’ll let our team guys handle The Game, but the life-sized impact the outcome of Saturday has on Jackson could provide a massive swing of momentum in Michigan’s direction to land his long-awaited final commitment. If Michigan beats Ohio State, the seismic shift it will put on college football is clear but it can’t be overstated that it, too, will have a dramatic effect on Jim Harbaugh’s 2022 class -- and classes beyond it -- by landing not one but two potential generational cornerbacks.
- Chicago (Ill.) Marist four-star ILB Jimmy Rolder committed to Michigan last week. My FutureCast had been in since Nov. 2. The family strongly hoped he would ultimately choose the Maize & Blue. It strongly advocated against Ohio State, which didn’t meet Rolder’s academic standards in comparison to Michigan. And Ross Business School was one of many upper hands U-M had in the process of landing Rolder. The fastest-rising recruit in the Midwest will visit for The Game on Saturday, yet another defensive commitment in the house. I’m sure he and Domani will meet. This was the plan all along, though, as Rolder’s stepfather told me last week that if Marist lost its playoff game -- it did on Saturday -- the family would head to Ann Arbor. That was before his commitment, but again that commitment seemed inevitable for many reasons.
- As we posted, Michigan safeties coach Ron Bellamy, a primary in-state recruiter for Michigan, hosted Detroit (Mich.) Cass Tech 2023 TE Khamari Anderson for a visit during U-M’s basketball game against Seton Hall. Since then, I’ve got word from two separate sources that indicated to me Anderson, whose brother Raheem is a current offensive lineman at Michigan, was as close to a lock as it gets. He visited Pitt over the wekeend, and it seems he will do his due diligence to travel and see what’s out there. But other schools have a long hill to climb as Michigan has a lead healthy enough to have earned a FutureCast from me for Anderson. Rivals gave him a fourth star in its new rankings, making a strong case for U-M to continue hitting the gas in his recruitment.
In not so great news, OrangeBloods.com’s Publisher Geoffrey Ketchum put in a FutureCast for Tennessee on North Cobb (Ga.) weakside DE Joshua Josephs. The three-star recruit is high on Michigan’s board and we’ve talked about him here … he has that prototypical body type the Wolverines have proven to be consistently successful in developing. Tennessee has been recruiting well down the stretch as threats to land three-star WR target Kaleb Webb and four-star RB target Justin Williams.
Stay tuned to the board as TJR Specials floated all over last week, they may do the same this week as news unravels about visitors, potential developments, and more.
