Mel's annual records at Michigan Tech are:
16-19-4 in 11-12
13-20-4. In 12-13
14-19-7 in 13-14
3-0-0 in 14-15 (in two games against Lake St and one against Ferris)
He has taken a program that had struggled mightily and instilled some life and hope. I like Mel a lot and know, from observing him on the recruting trail, that he was respected by potential players and parents alike. The exact same thing can be said for Billy Powers.
I understand that Mel believed he had to go out and establish a track record of his own to be eventually considered for the Michigan job. His alma mater provided the perfect opportunity for that. He may even have found a new home in his old home.
The who and the when regarding Coach Berenson's eventual successor will be intriguing. I don't believe there are any foregone conclusions at the present. I do believe Berenson will have a say in who replaces him, if he so desires.
