UM's top two defenses in the last 20 years have both been coached by new DCs that had the advantage of a ton of experienced players in their first year and were essentially new to the Big 10 (never having coordinated in the past). True Brown coordinated at BC, but he's definitely new to the B10 and is loaded with experienced players.

Plus, he strikes me as a generally pissed-off individual.

Brown does give me the impression that he is a cranky old bastard. See my Ditka comments. He is funny. No nonsense. No wonder he and Harbaugh get along well. Brown isn't running for political office.

Now to your point which I think is very astute and you should be given some kudos for acknowledging this variable...Brown is inheriting a stacked defense the same way Jim H. got back in the day.

Not saying Brown isn't a better DC but Brown must realize he has essentially this year to create a dominant once in a generation type of UM defense. Most of these guys will be gone next year. Not saying UM can't have good defenses but if you look at this defense now...that is some serious talent...I mean NFL draft talent. This defense can give UM a chance to win any game. Any game including against a team like Clemson.

You have a dominant DL then any opposing offense is swimming up stream. Not only that...they have depth on line coming out of their ears.

1985, 1997, and 2006, those are the benchmark defenses at UM in the last 30 years. They all shared similar characteristics, excellent DLs and great DBs. The last two had DCs unfamiliar to the BIG.

Excited? I damn sure am to think we might have a once a decade defense.

I am beyond excited. I think people are going to see what depth does for a defense. It makes it harder to run and allows the blitz to be effective.

We will see but I think the expectation for this defense should be at least the 2006 defense and closer to the 97 team. As a previous thread indicated...it is a different defense than the 97 team but it has it's own unique strength...

I expect Charlton and Gary to go hog wild. My surprise...Thomas and Hill with big years...wreaking havoc from the safety positions.
