No more trips during spring break after this year. Should be interesting to see if Harbaugh sneaks in one more. Doesn't matter because Harbaugh accomplished his goal of making michigan important again in the minds of recruits, now he just has to win on the field. The michigan AD brought up a good argument in that why is it OK for basketball teams to take tours overseas during the summer?

FWIW --- basketball teams taking overseas tours --- that's only allowed once every 4 years. It's not completely unrestricted.

Didn't realize it was once every 4 years...probably a good rule but if coaches like coach k wanted to go every year I bet it would change.

Perhaps. I thought restricting off-campus spring football practice to once per 4 years would have been a good compromise. I can see both sides of the coin: (1) off-campus practice is a good team-bonding experience but, (2) student-athletes shouldn't have to do it every spring, they should also have the opportunity to use spring break as a personal-time 1 week vacation like all the rest of their classmates.

But it looks like the NCAA member schools went for the complete ban as regards football.

They're just going to study abroad in Rome instead, and do it during the school year to get around this rule. This has been in the works for a while now, but Harbaugh is one step ahead of the NCAA (SEC and ACC specifically) on this one. He's already used it as a recruiting tool.

Summer isn't technically a break period, you are able to take classes in the summer. Spring Break is specified as a break with no activities taking place on campus. I'm sure that's the way they are able to differentiate the two things here.

I could be wrong but I bet there are some basketball players that take spring and summer classes.
