Weekend preview Oct 17-18 UNH

Michigan finally dives into to the meat of the regular season schedule this Friday and Saturday with a pair of home contests against New Hampshire as part of the Big Ten/Hockey East Challenge.

The Wolverines lost their only previous matchup to Ferris State in the season opener on the road earlier this month.

After losing four of their top five scorers to graduation, New Hampshire will rely heavily on senior captain forward Mark Willows for much of their offense. Willows recorded the Wildcats only goal in last weekend's 3-1 loss to Union College in their season kickoff game.

Fellow senior forward Grayson Downing is the only other returning player who hit double digits in goals with 10 last season.

New Hampshire senior goaltender Casey DeSmith remains suspended indefinitely. Freshman netminder Adam Clark, from Salmon Arm in the BCHL, took DeSmith's place against Union College.

In the weekend series, the two of the longest-tenured head coaches in Div 1 NCAA hockey will square off. Michigan's Red Berenson is in his 31st campaign at the helm of the Wolverines and Dick Umile is in his 25th season as New Hampshire's head coach.

it was an interesting game against the defending champs last week for UNH - they played quite well for the entire game and carried much of the play, however they gave up not one but two shorthanded goals on the same powerplay and that was pretty much the game. UNH has lots of question marks, where are the goals going to come from...and how will the new goalie hold up, but they do have some young talent as well. Looking forward to the games.
