I thought that I would post some thoughts on several Class of 2026 and younger prospects that Michigan is or should be involved with. Just random thoughts.

Class of 2026 (Current Freshmen)

We have offered three 2026 QBs, and they happen to be my top three QBs in the class: Julian Lewis, Brady Smigiel and Kane Archer. The one to keep an eye on is Smigiel. He is 6-5, 190 and had a monster frosh season for Newbury Park (228/346 passing for 3,479 yards, 46 TDs and 11 INT). A very poised and composed young man. Michigan type. His dad, Joe Smigiel, played at Arizona. But Brady is more big-time than that. It so happens that his grandfather attended Michigan.

It is not a stellar year for running backs, but players are starting to emerge. The only RB in the class with a Michigan offer is Messiah Mickens (5-11, 185, Camp Hill Trinity, PA). .As a freshman RB/WR on a 10-5 2A team in 13 games he had 123 carries for 961 yards and 18 TDs, 16 receptions for 200 yards, 12 tackles, 13 assists, 3 TFL, and 2 KRs for a 24.0 avg. Ohio State, A&M, Penn State and Alabama are among his other offers. He is among 4-5 backs in serious consideration for the top back in the class.

Michigan has been more active in handing out offers to 2026 wide receivers-12 thus far. I am not going to mention them all in this update, but they have offered my top two WRs in the nation-Corey (CJ) Sadler of Detroit Cass Tech and Malachi Toney of Plantation American Heritage (FL). They SHOULD offer asap the next two kids on my list: Jabari Brady (6-3, 190, Coconut Creek Monarch, FL) had an illustrious youth career and followed up with 43 receptions for 864 yards and 6 TDs for a state power. To top it off, in his first track meet of the year last week he ripped off a 10.59 100 meters; Chris Henry (6-4, 175, Cincinnati Withrow). The son of the late former Bengal Chris Henry was an all-district performer at West Clermont before transferring. The first in-stater in the class to be offered by Ohio State. PSU, A&M, Notre Dame and Tennessee among his other offers. Where are you Michigan?

Three less-heralded Ohio receivers have offers in Allen Hill Jr. (6-5, 190, Youngstown Austintown-Fitch), Zion Robinson (6-3, 165, Pickerington North), and Payton Cook (6-2, 175, Arkron Archbishop Hoban). JaQuan Dennis (6-8, 190, Detroit Old Redford Academy) is a long receiver who was offered by Michigan for football back in May as an 8th-grader. His future, though, is likely in hoops, where he is a big-timer with early offers from Penn State and UMass. One other WR of note is David Rodriguez (6-1, 155, Windsor Loomis Chaffee School, CT), a prep school star originally from Rhode Island with offers from the likes of PSU and Georgia.

Carson Sneed (TE/DE, 6-6, 220, Nashville Donelson Christian Academy) is a long two-way end just offered the other day. He has a wide wingspan, huge hands and is very athletic. As a freshman he had 63 tackles, 17 TFL and 2 INTs. Great upside. Jack Janda (6-5, 220, Orchard Lake St. Mary’s) is an in-state TE/DE to watch out for. Not offered yet by Michigan. West Virginia is his first P5 offer.

I list three 2026 OL prospect with early offers from Michigan. Two-way lineman Jahkeem Stewart (6-6, 285, New Orleans St. Augustine) could be the top overall prospect in the nation when all is said and done. A middle school freak who had offers from most of the nation’s blue bloods, he hd to sit out his freshman season due to a late transfer. He will be a tough pull. Khalief Canty, on the other hand, is a more reasonable target. The 6-4, 305 OL from Detroit Cass Tech was a second team All-Detroit selection as a freshman starter. He is s real mauler with good feet and body control for such a thickly built lineman. MSU, Kentucky and WVU are other early P5 offers. Mark Walbridge (6-6, 270, Needham St. Sebastian's School, MA) is Michigan’s other early offer. He actually transferred into his prep school for the 2022 season and reclassified from Class of 2025 to 2026 (standard operating procedure for just about every public high school kid transferring to a New England prep school). Another kid with a wide wingspan who moves well. BC, PITT, Tennessee, Michigan Satte and WVU his other early P5 offers.

Michigan has offered seven 2026 DL prospects, including five of my top six defensive linemen. The other two are Buford prospects who have high ceilings but have had to wait their turn in the most talent-laden program located between Baltimore (St. Francis) and Bradenton (IMG): James Morroe (6-4, 230) and Ben Mubenga (6-4, 235). The kids in the top five are Deuce Geralds (6-2, 240, Suwanee Collins Hill, GA), James Carrington (6.-3, 270, Baltimore St. Francis Academy), Brye Perry-Wright (6-3, 240, another Buford kid), Preston Carey (6-5, 280, Melville St. Anthony’s, NY) and Tomuhini Topui (6-4, 300, Santa Ana Mater Dei). Carrington is the most realistic target among that first five. Originally from Virginia and out of the 757 Colts youth league program, Michigan was his childhood favorite and has strong ties to both 757 Colts and SFA (Biff Poggi built that program). The three Buford kids should be of interest. Georgia is loaded with talent and the University of Georgia can’t take ‘em all. That opens a window for schools like Michigan to pop in and steal away some serious talent. And landing 2025 Buford LB Mantrez Walker provides us with an early in to land more talent from the school.

Another highly regarded DL who Michigan has yet to offer is Cameron Brickle II (6-2, 268, Malvern Prep, PA). He has a nice early offer list: BC, PITT, MD, RUT, PSU, SYR, TEN, WVU. He also has a strong interest in Michigan, having visited for the Illinois game.

I have identified three LB prospects with Michigan early offers. The stud of the group, and also in the discussion for the top overall prospect in the nation, is Tyler Atkinson (OLB, 6-3, 195, Loganville Grayson). Like Stewart, he was a middle school phenom and racked up a long list of offers from the nation’s top programs. Unlike Stewart, however, he played as a freshman and did he ever play. Grayson is one of the most aelent-laden teams in the state (Michigan OL Trente Jones went there) and as a freshman on a 10-2 7A team and he had 51 tackles, 50 assists, 20 TFL, 8 sacks, 27 hurries, 4 PBUs and 1 FR in earning first team all-region honors. A complete stud.

Maurice Barnes (6-2, 195, Harrisburg Bishop McDevitt) shined as a freshman for a state power. From the same program as highly touted 2025 QB Stone Saunders, who Michigan is also actively recruiting. Also a solid RB, but defense is his future.

Michigan has offered eight DBs in the 2026 class. The best of the bunch could be Tay Lockett (6-1,165, San Diego University City), a speedy, physical and explosive CB prospect. As a freshman WR/CB on a 11-3 team he had 54 tackles, 31 assists, 2 TFL, 7 INTs returned for 104 yards, 9 PBUs, 4 FRs, 3 FFs, 3 KRs for a 13.0 avg and 9 PRs for a 21.0 avg. Big-timer with a long list (20+) of offers, including USC, PSU, FSU, Oklahoma and A&M. Amari Sabb (5-10, 165, Glassboro, NJ) is the younger brother of Michigan safety Keon Sabb and older brother of 2027 DB Xavier Sabb. As a freshman cornerback he picked off four passes and recorded 27 tackles. On offense he ran for a team-high 754 yards, averaged 6.6 yards per carry, added 14 catches and scored eight touchdowns. PSU, Georgia, Ole Miss and Oregon have also offered.

Michigan is hitting Tennessee hard. Two frosh DBs with early offers are Shavar Young Jr. (6-1, 175, Knoxville Webb) and his teammate Chaston Smith (6-1, 140). Young is a special prospect. He was a first team all-stater in his private school division as a freshman and has great speed, length and athleticism. Ole Miss offered both of these kids early (at least one camped there), so I wonder if there is a Chris Partridge connection.

Brody Jennings (6-1, 170, Jacksonville Sandalwood) had a fine frosh season. He is the younger brother of former Michigan verbal Branden Jennings. He was offered early by George Helow, so I am not sure to what extent there is still mutual interest. Simeon Caldwell is another Helow-area player (6-3, 180, 4.67, Jacksonville Bolles) with an offer, but I think he was offered just after Helow left (not sure on that, need to double-check). Another Florida DB who was just offered is small school corner Dominic Turnbull (6-2, 165, Miami True North Classical Academy). He is long. lean and fast. Has shined in passing camps. Another kid where Ole Miss was his first P5 offer. Partridge? Finally, Buford safety Nassir McCoy saw some late-season varsity reps. He is big (6-2, 175) and fast (11.2 100 meters as an 8th-grader) Michigan is in on him early, as is South Carolina. One to watch.

Some final notes on the class of 2026:

Class of 2027 (Current 8th-graders)

Phil (Trae) Taylor is a QB out or Crystal Lake South (IL) who has an early offer from Maryland. He is a bit small at 5-9, 150 but is a real arm talent. He visited Michigan for a couple of games this past season. Alsoa fine student. Michigan would be at or near the top of the list if they offer.

Jameson Purcell is another talented QB out of Illinois. He is 6-1, 157 and will be playing his high school ball at state power Maine South. Ole Miss and UAB have already offered. He is a southpaw with a live arm and good mobility. Camped at Michigan last summer and visited for at least one game this past season.

Isaiah Garrett is a 5-10, 168 RB who will be attending Cincinnati Winton-Wood high school, the same school as 2023 signee Camerin Calhoun. He is an explosive back with a big-time future. Michigan was his first offer.

Chris Flores Jr. is a WR/DB out of California who trains with Stars Prep Academy. An under-the-radar sort who caught Michigan’s attention at their June 2022 camp, so much so that they offered the kid.

Dijuan Edwards is a 5-11, 176 RB who has been lighting it up for the Southfield Falcons and will be attending Orchard Lake St. Mary’s next year. He runs with great power and speed and is put together well for a young back. Also, a talented defender. Unsure if related to Donovan, but he plays like he is.

Anthony Cartwright is a 6-3, 190 receiver out of Southfield Christian who probably projects as a TE as he fills out. Long, athletic, wide catch radius, great ball skills. Also stars in hoops and baseball.

William Tobin is a 6-3, 285, 5.30 OL out if Brighton, MI. A youth leagues star with good size and bend. Very physical. Good wrestler.

Xavier Sabb is a 6-0, 175 DB/ATH out of Glassboro, NJ. Already has early offers from PSU, Oregon, Ole Miss and Rutgers. The youngest of three talented Sabb brothers (Keon and Amari being the other two), the oldest of whom is a freshman safety at Michigan. Keep an eye out for him. That Ole Miss offer came from a certain Chris Partridge.
