Class of 2017 quarterback Dylan McCaffrey (Littleton, Colorado) may have a Heisman runner-up as a brother, but he is looking to carve his own path.
Dylan, the brother of Stanford star running back Christian McCaffrey, is one of the top quarterbacks in his class and is considered by some the frontrunner to be the signal caller of Michigan's 2017 class.
Maize 'n Brew caught up with McCaffrey this week to shed some light on his recruitment and where the Wolverines stand and his brother's impact on his path to college.
"He wants what is best for me, and to take my own journey. If the best fit is Stanford, he'll tell me. If it's not, he'll tell me, and he'll support me," he said.
His first visit to Ann Arbor came during his sophomore year. He reflected on his takeaways from that trip.
"It is awesome. Ann Arbor is great, and not many schools can contend with that community, or with Michigan's rich tradition," McCaffrey said.
He was back in town this past October for the game against Michigan State. Even though the result was not what Michigan wanted, McCaffrey still found the positives in the situation.
"I noticed how even after the tragedy of that loss, fans were cheering on after the game. No matter what they love their team," he said.
So, what is it about Michigan that sets them apart from other programs in his eyes?
"The community around the university isn't topped anywhere across the country," McCaffrey noted. "Their coaching staff just has so much NFL experience."
As much as McCaffrey loved the community and overall staff, he had specific thoughts on head coach Jim Harbaugh.
"No one out there is better than Harbaugh, maybe just as good, but no one is better," he said.
McCaffrey sees the fit at Michigan and likes how the staff makes adjustments and is able to get the best effort out of everyone.
"I love how (Harbaugh) adjusts. Look what he did with Colin Kaepernick. He gets the best out of his guys," McCaffrey said.
With basketball taking up a lot of time, the dual sport star will likely take his visits in spring.
"I'll head out for visits after basketball season in the spring, if I haven't already committed," McCaffrey said.
"I thought I would wait a lot longer, but recent events will lead to me likely making my decision sooner rather than later."
McCaffrey currently has no visits planned. He holds offers from Michigan, Nebraska, Colorado, UCLA and Duke, among others.
