Setting aside ""All"" the other aspects of QB play, such as reads, steps, timing etc, the one true aspect of great QB's is the natural effortless ability to throw the ball. Good spin, the ability to have soft touch on short swing passes, Bullet passes, long passes with perfect trajectory. This is number one in my mind for a great QB because without this first natural ability, a QB can never be great at the second most important "Natural Ability", Accuracy!
If you have a kid who can make all the different types of throws "naturally" without hitches, quirks or funky motions, then you have a kid that can move on to being great at the teachable things.
In my mind, its like shooting a basketball. BB Coaches from Jr High on up, hopefully teach perfect shooting mechanics to kids. You must have the proper arch, the proper backspin, hand spread, square elbow bend, hand placement in front of face, proper follow through, knee bend and push timing, etc. to be a great shooter. If any of these thing are off, down goes the shooting percentage.
Now if you have a QB who has the perfect mechanics and accuracy with that,,,,,,,,, oh my.
Yes, last Saturday we got to watch a kid who at first view, seems to have the first two attributes.
Thats worth its weight in gold. Now yes, many many other factors will yet lead into the total success of Mr.Peters, but at first glance,, the kid has the Natural instinct and ability to move on to the other "teachable" things of the game.
I look forward to seeing a Natural at work under the Tutelage of Coach Harbaugh.
