Listen, this season is a bit of a s***show. For college football, for the Big Ten, for Michigan. Its an abbreviated schedule being played in a pandemic, and to be honest who knows how many other games we will have this season. Throw in the fact that we have an exceptionally young team and a lot of key injuries on the defensive and offensive lines, and it is a recipe for a lot of struggles. But here is the upside - the talent is young and they are getting a ton of reps in a season that will have an asterisk for many people mentally. Sure, I want to win tonight and will be rooting like hell for us to surprise everyone. But I'm also going to be looking for progress. Young defensive backs turning for the ball and making plays even if they get beat occasionally. Young running backs hitting holes made by young offensive lineman who are learning for free without using up eligibility. A QB with a mountain of talent working through his progressions and learning to feel the pocket. I expect some definite struggles tonight but also some high points that point towards the future. Focus on those and what might be next year. I know the games "count" but this sort of feels like an elongated spring practice that we all get to see. Most of the guys on the field will be back next year, with more help on the way. This season was never going to be a championship one anyways, so lets take advantage of the opportunity to work through our growing pains when the world is focused on more important things.
And if your response is to tell me to buzz off because you hate watching us lose - I totally respect that as well. And I hope we are all wrong and we surpise the hell out of people tonight. Go Blue!
