CB nailed it when questioning if UM will be an elite program...I'll take it one step further...has UM ever been? Since JH was hired, I have seen post after post, article after article wanting UM to return to football elite, while there might have been some pockets of being elite, I do not see that as the case overall. Early/mid-70s in the Big10, but lost plenty of OOC and bowl games. Late 80s, a couple of real good years. 1997/99 elite. 2006 was nice but ended with a thud. I think UM being good/very good was the norm but not elite.
Can JH get us there...maybe on occassion...but there is alot working against him.
Michigan is not one of the talent rich football states, Ohio is. Florida is. Texas is. All places where OSU has a major foothold in recruiting.
Recruiting shenanigans. UM is simply not going to do it.
Bad decsions by previous ADs...still paying for it. I saw a quote, maybe by Soup? about taking 5 years to get out of this mess. The lack of a coaching tree/succession plan by Lloyd was also a killer. Bad leadership really hit the program hard. Again, 2011 JH would have been far ahead of where we are now but we all know Brandon and JH's egos would not have co-existed.
The constant pro rumors. If JH is committed to UM come out and say it. I know it's talking heads but it doesn't help.
I do think JH knows that UM is at an "athlete disadvantage," and the offensive/defensive systems are designed to try and address this:
1) Defense-high risk/high reward...pressure the QB and force bad decsions/turnovers. Roll the dice with man to man coverage. Sometimes you naiil it...sometimes you get yesterday.
2) Offense-keep the chains moving. Run effective, use TEs (when they catch the ball!), dominate TOP.
A definite damper on a 10 win season, but more positive than negative. Our DLine disappeared somewhere along the way after PSU. As we lack the depth of the elite, we have a a very slim margin for error against the elites.
