I wanted to look and see if the narrative in our heads about slow road starts under Harbaugh matched up with the stats. Looking at the numbers this seems that its gotten worse the last two seasons. In 2015-2016 we didn't score a ton in the first quarter, but we didn't dig holes either. Now we are starting slow on both sides of the ball. Here are some of the stats.
- On the road under Harbaugh we've been outscored 55-67 in the first quarter
- We've been the first team to score in 8 of 16 road games, but we're only averaging 3.43 points in the first quarter
- We've only scored more than 7 points in the first quarter on the road once - the 78-0 game vs Rutgers where we scored 14
- In 2015 and 2016 we actually did pretty well, outscoring our opponents 45-22 in the first quarter.
- In our last 7 games, we've been outscored 45-10 in the first quarter.
- That includes falling behind 14-0 at PSU, 7-0 at Wisconsin, 14-0 at Notre Dame, and 10-0 vs Northwestern.
- Not surprisingly, we are 9-2 in the games where we are ahead or tied at the end of the first quarter and 1-4 (thanks @timthumb) when we are trailing after one quarter
