First things first- Who knows?

Is Cadeau better that Donaldson? I have no idea. I have a feeling that May loves his speed, quickness, passing and upside.

Trey is the better scorer now, but the numbers are very close.
Trey: 11.3 PPG, 4.1 assists, 3.5 rebounds, 43.3% FG, 38% from 3.
EC: 9.4 PPG, 6.2 assists, 2.9 rebounds, 45% FG, 34% from 3.

Cadeau, by my untrained eye looks like much more of a true PG, while Trey is an undersized lead or combo guard.

Anyhoo, I was looking at all of the guards who are portal candidates that listed Michigan on their offer sheet.
It looks right now like there are 9 other guards (one a G/F) that Michigan has been in contact with.

I will list them in order of who I personally like the best, though I have no idea who the coaching staff is really focused on.

  1. Sam Lewis - SOPH- 6'6" 200- Toledo- Stats: 16.2 PPG, 4.7 RPG, 1.2 APG, 47% FG, 44% from 3. Other #s: 59 made threes on 44%.
  2. Keonte Jones- GR- 6'6" 192- Cal State Northridge- Stats: 13.1 PPG, 9.0 RPG, 4.1 APG, 51% FG, 38% from 3. Other key #s: 1.3 Blocks, 1.8 steals
  3. Cam Craft-SOPH-6'6" 205 Miami, Ohio Stats: 13.6 PPG, 3.0 RPG, 1.0 APG, 45% FG, 43% from 3. Other #s: 97 made 3-pointers on 43%.
  4. Jasai Miles- SOPH- 6'6" 205-North Florida- Stats: 15.4 PPG, 4.2 RPG, 1.9 APG, 43% FG, 34% from 3. Other #s: 78 made 3-pointers
  5. Bubu Benjamin- SOPH-6'7" 205-Tarleton State Stats: 13.9 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 1.7 APG,44% FG, 38% from 3. Other #s: 1.2 steals.
  6. Abdi Bashir-SOPH-6'7" 160- Monmouth- Stats: 20.1 PPG, 2.6 RPG, 1.7 APG, 38% FG, 38% from 3. Other #s: Nation-leading 127 made 3s.
  7. Rodney Rice-SOPH-6'4" 198, Maryland Stats: 13.8 PPG, 2.2 RPG, 2.1 APG, 43% FG, 37% from 3. Other #s: 80 made 3-pointers.
  8. Tyrone Riley IV-FR- 6'6" 180, San Francisco Stats: 9.6 PPG, 6.0 RPG, 1.0 APG, 50% FG, 32% from 3. Other #s: 1.2 steals.
  9. Sebastian Mack- SOPH- 6'3" 200 UCLA Stats: 9.6 PPG, 2.1 RPG, 1.7 APG, 42% FG, 31% from 3. Other #s: 12.1 PPG & 1.3 steals in 2023-24.
Looking at this list I can really see what Coach Dusty is looking for (for the most part) as we the the similarities between the players:

All but two of the nine targets are 6'6" or taller (2 are 6'7"), the others are 6"4" 198, and 6'3" 200. Definitely looking for big guards.

Six of them are big-time three point shooters, with seven shooting higher than 37% from deep from a high volume- The other, Jasai Miles shot 34% from deep but made 78 threes. By comparison, Nimari led this season's Michigan team with 66 threes.

Bashir, who I have 3rd on this list due to his poor 2-point FG shooting and ultra thin (160 pounds at 6'7") frame, hit a college basketball best 127 3-pointers, by further comparison.

As for my list, really there's very little difference between the top 7 players- They could be easily interchanged, so the order is just a suggestion.

In addition, all but one of the targets is an underclassman.
That's Keonte Jones, a grad transfer whose numbers look like a video game, albeit at a small program. I have him near the top of the list because of his obvious activity whim makes me think of him as a possible shut down defender- 1.3 blocks, 1.8 steals and 2.6 offensive rebounds are the numbers of an extreme hustler. While he shot a good % from 3, he only attempted one three-point shot per game, and may be more of a forward.

As for the rest of the targets, including commits Morez Johnson and Elliot Cadeau: They all have at least two more seasons of eligibility- I'm seeing a pattern.

The last two players on this list are the only two I would not be super excited about Michigan signing. Riley, IMO may be more of a forward than a G, and Mack has not proven to be a good three point shooter.

This overall list is really encouraging, as there are many as 7 options that would fit as a tall (6'6"+) deep-shooting guard on next season's team, with productive experience under his belt.

One more thought- With 4 in the portal and an open space in the incoming class, Michigan actually has 3 more schollies to give: One for another starting-caliber big man, and perhaps then we could take two players off of this list.

On a hope, I would take Keonte Jones and one of the other top 7 guys on this list- Lewis is my guy, but my mind can easily be swayed...

*edit moving Bashir down from 3 to 6.
