and my mind flashed back to a conversation I had six years ago with my law school roommate. Michael was, and is, a rabid Illinois fan, and the Illini had just received a commitment from former Michigan target Jalen Coleman-Lands, who Michigan stopped recruiting after securing DIII transfer Duncan Robinson (I swear, the first time I heard the name from CB, and before I knew the backstory, I thought some Spurs fan named Robinson thought it would be clever to name his/her child after San Antonio's twin towers). Anyway, Illinois fans were crowing about Coleman-Lands, and one went so far as to laugh at Michigan for signing Robinson and cutting Coleman-Lands loose. Michael called me and said "I just posted on the Illinois board the following: 'your evaluation, John Beilein's evaluation, I'm going Beilein.'"
Last night, Duncan hit the third most 3s in an NBA finals game in history, behind only Steph Curry and Ray Allen. This fall, Coleman-Lands is getting a sixth year to play on his third college team. Illinois has apparently seen the light, and has its own DIII transfer, 6'6" Austin Hutcherson, on this year's roster. Hutcherson, from Wesleyan, which plays in the same conference as Williams (Duncan's first school), is known as a knockdown shooter from deep.
Good times.
