Question on smoking a pork shoulder

Going to smoke 4 lb shoulder of pork for my wife and me. Smoked lots of food (bacon, salmon, cheese, even water) but never a shoulder or butt of pork.

Some recipes say to apply the rub the day before. Some say to apply just salt the day before and the rub right before smoking.

Some say to spray the shoulder with apple juice and apple cider vinegar, some don't.

Any opinions?

Fwiw, using an offset smoker with hardwood charcoal and apple wood. Thanks!
