Just wondered your opinion as to whether the softball team has what it takes to make it to the WCWS this year. based on performance to date. Being ranked 8th indicates "in theory" they should be able to do it. They've also won 17 games in a row, though that may just mean most of the rest of the Big Ten (except OSU and Northwestern) aren't very good.

Also, being ranked 8th, is it likely that Michigan will get to host both a Regional and (if they win the Regional of course) a Super-Regional - i.e., will only have to win games at home in order to get to the WCWS?

Not Spath, but we are hosting a softball regional as the overall #5

seed in the tournament. IF we win, we will also likely host a Super Regional as the top remaining 8 seeds host Super Regionals unless there is a scheduling conflict in terms of field availability. This week's regional has U-M vs. Miami (O.) and ND vs. Clev. State on Friday. After that, the winners of those two games play at noon Saturday, with an elimination game between the Friday losers immediately following. THe third game Saturday will also be an elimination game between the Noon loser on Saturday and the 2:30 game winner. The survivor of that game then has to beat woever is 2-0 at that point twice on Sunday to advance. Hopefully Michigan is the team sitting pretty at 2-0 come Saturday night, and would only need to win once Sunday in two tries (if needed).

How could we have a scheduling conflict in terms of field availability? Our softball stadium isn't used for anything else, is it? (envisions a giant tractor pull pre-empting the Super-Regional . . . .)
