Just a few thoughts on the team before tomorrow’s season-opener:
- O’Maury Samuels reportedly looked good in a recent scrimmage. No need to burn his redshirt, but one of the reasons we were hearing little on him was due to his missing many early practices due to his class schedule.
- We have FIVE tight ends who will see quality time. Never seen such a deep group in my life, and that is AFTER losing Jake Butt to graduation and Devin Asiasi to transfer.
- Who is not excited to see the true freshman WRs? Best receiver class in Michigan history. DPJ and Tarki are special. Oliver Martin could be another Kolesar or Calloway.
- Ulizio winning the starting RT spot, at least for now, is one of the biggest surprises of the fall camp. Perhaps it should not be, however. Don’t forget that the reason why he was not not mentioned as a front-runner heading into fall was due to his missing a lot of time during spring practice due to an injury. Back last fall the staff was speaking more highly of him than classmate Jon Runyan. Also interesting to see that the staff is going with one of their first recruits over a couple of kids who committed to the prior staff (JBB and Runyan). Still, I think this will be a battle between Ulizio and Runyan for the next few weeks. Lets see if Nolan can hold onto the job on the field.
- Looks like Tyrone Wheatley will be starting at TE. Did Bunting missing time early in camp set hiom back where he is now only number three on the depth chart after Wheatley and McKeon?
- Pleasant camp surprises: Ulizio, Ben Mason, Kwity Paye, Kareem Walker, Josh Ross, Jaylen Kelly-Powell
- Need to step it up: David Long, Brandon Peters, JBB, Josh Uche (inj), Elysee Mbem-Bosse
- We were hearing a lot about Benjamin St. Juste in spring, but Kelly-Powell is getting more mention at corner right now after Ambry Thomas among the true frosh
- What’s up with Wrobo? Don Brown was raving about him in spring. Not hearing much on him late in camp. Passed up by the youngsters?

Roster Updates
I have done a quick review of the roster that Michigan just posted the other day. A few comments:
There were 15 true freshmen who were reportedly planning to attend Michigan as preferred walk-ons this season. Ten of those 15 are listed on the 2017 roster, five are not. Below is a breakdown of all 15 preferred walk-ons. The first group are those that are on the roster. The next group are those that are not.
Of particular interest is the move of MaxPreps first team All-American Matt Brown from LB to fullback. This is a brilliant moved given the lack of underclass fullbacks on the team and he has a realistic chance of being the top back-up to Ben Mason in 2018.
Also of interest is the only other true freshman to make the roster, Lake Orion grad John (Jack) Luby, who is listed at 6-6, 241. He must be rapidly filling out as he was just 6-6, 211 or 6-8, 189 as a prep senior back in 2015. I wonder what he has been doing the past couple of years as he is listed as a true freshman on the roster despite being a 2015 high school graduate. Certainly filling out.

Other first-year roster players are sophomore RB Jared Char, sophomore WR Eric Kim and senior TE Bradford Jones. Congratulations to these three upperclass newcomers on making the team!
Turning towards the upperclassmen, some position moves and other items that have caught my attention that you may be unfamiliar with are the following:
- Daniel Jokisch (son of former Michigan player Dan and nephew of Paul) moving from wide receiver to the offensive line. That may seem like an odd move on its face, but at 6-4, 251 he never had prototypical size for a receiver.
- Michigan lists five walk-ons at TE, including two PWOs I like a lot in Carter Selzer (who I had projected as a DE) and Connor Edmonds
- Two of the walk-on RBs are pretty solid as Joey Hewlett (son of former Michigan QB/S Rich Hewlett) was just put on scholarship and former Warren DeLaSalle star Tru Wilson could see time as per Dan Dierdorf on the radio today.
- Jack Dunaway is now listed as a LB, not a DE. He is the son of former Michigan TE Craig Dunaway
- DB Tyler Cochran is the son of former star Michigan CB Brad Cochran
- Kyle Seychel is back on the team after leaving last fall. He is expected to be the starter on kick-offs
- Frosh PWO Jake McCurry shined as a prep receiver, but with so much talent at the position in that class he is getting a look in the secondary
- Frosh PWO OLs Jesse Speight (Wilton’s brother) and Sean Fitzgerald are quality walk-ons
- One of the reasons why long-snapper Scott Sypniewski was not invited back is because the staff has loaded up on PWO long-snappers the past few years, with soph Cameron Cheeseman challenging senior Andrew Robinson for the starting spot and frosh Matt Baldeck waiting in the wings

You could also point out that to the Mount Pleasant High School varsity football team, Fitzgerald has served as its own great wall. Fitzgerald, the mammoth left tackle for the Oilers and committed to play football at Air Force Academy, made 32 career starts at Mount Pleasant and left an indelible mark on the program. Already a Division 3-4 first team All-State selection and All-Saginaw Valley League performer, Fitzgerald is our choice as The Morning Sun Offensive Player of the Year. It is an honor that typically goes to a quarterback or another offensive player that puts up the yardage and scores the bulk of the touchdowns, but a player of Fitzgerald’s stature does not come around very often when picking the best of the best. “Sean is a football player,” Oilers head coach Jason McIntyre said. “It’s in his DNA. He loves the contact. He loves playing his position. He plays as hard as any guy you’ll ever see play. He’s a guy you almost need to rein back, but Sean has learned to control his aggression on the field a lot from when he first became a varsity starter.” Mount Pleasant lost 27 seniors from last year’s roster, while a few other key contributors to the 2015 roster opted not to play. Fitzgerald needed to be a leader for the 2016 Oilers, something which he easily transitioned into. He even began the weekly ‘Great Wall Wednesdays’ team bonding day, where teammates would meet for a meal at Great Wall of Mount Pleasant. “As a kid I spent a lot of time at the Great Wall buffet,” Fitzgerald laughed. “My friends and I always went there. So I was thinking, ‘Why not have Great Wall Wednesdays?’ We’ve gotten a picture with the manager and everything. That’s the one thing I’ve looked forward to most the last few years.” The Oilers began the season 1-4 as they were clearly adjusting to new roles, but once the dust settled Fitzgerald and company embarked on a four-game winning streak that nearly propelled them into the postseason. Fitzgerald managed to accept how the season concluded despite the lack of a playoff appearance. “Coach McIntyre told us that he’d never ended a season with a win before,” Fitzgerald said. “It didn’t sink in for us at first and we looked at each other wondering what he was talking about. Then it all made sense. It gave us a ton of motivation to go out and get a win in that last game, even if it wouldn’t be enough to get us in the playoffs.” Mount Pleasant overcame a two-score deficit against Saginaw Heritage to secure a 28-17 victory. In nine games, the Oilers gained 1,966 yards on the ground and passed for an additional 935 yards. Fitzgerald even contributed a rushing touchdown in a win over Saginaw Arthur Hill. “When he came to us as a sophomore he was really just a guy who wanted to run around and block people,” McIntyre said. “That is what football was to him. But over the last three years, he’s really progressed into a leader for our program and especially for those offensive linemen. He made that offensive line group feel special, with things like Great Wall Wednesdays.” “To be honest with you, without him and those five or six offensive linemen – we don’t win five games. They were the glue that held us together all year.” But as an offensive lineman who improved his craft considerably over the last three years, he gives the utmost credit to Mount Pleasant offensive line coach Andrew Biedenbender. The 6'3" 230 lb. Florida-product visited Michigan last weekend as a potential preferred walk-on to the football program, but he's already managed to overcome insurmountable odds when he beat cancer last year.Diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma some two years ago, Veingrad battled and beat cancer, returning to the field in 2015 after missing some time to undergo chemotherapy and treatment................ Palm Beach Post: A knee injury cost Ryan Veingrad his entire sophomore season with the Spanish River football team. Cancer could have claimed far more.The 6-foot-3, 230-pound defensive end was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma in December 2014, just a month after the football season ended.The diagnosis came as a surprise to Veingrad, who was in good physical condition at the time.“I actually felt fine,” he said. “I just started getting big lumps on my neck, and then we went to the hospital.”Veingrad began immediate treatment for the disease, a type of blood cancer that affects the lymphatic system. It is one of the most curable forms of cancer with treatment, which often includes chemotherapy, radiation or both.“They told me the chances of (treatment) being successful and working were pretty high,” Veingrad said.Veingrad underwent two rounds of chemotherapy, one at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis and the other at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood.He missed two weeks of school, and lost 35 pounds.The ordeal was a challenging one for Veingrad, both physically and emotionally. But the treatment worked. The cancer was gone.Life returned to near normal for Veingrad, who was eager to get back to the weight room after completing his treatment. He began a workout regimen about five months after his diagnosis, and slowly grew stronger.“I’ve been working out, trying to get my weight back up,” he said. “I went down to 185 pounds.”It took Veingrad months to regain the weight he lost during his cancer treatment, and he remained underweight as the 2015 football season got underway.But he started at defensive end for head coach Bill Ceasar and the Sharks, who shook off years of futility and finished 5-5.Ceasar attributes much of Spanish River’s success last season to Veingrad’s leadership and perseverance following his illness.“He’s an amazing inspiration,” Ceasar said. “Kids realized if he could do it, they could do it. - O’Maury Samuels reportedly looked good in a recent scrimmage. No need to burn his redshirt, but one of the reasons we were hearing little on him was due to his missing many early practices due to his class schedule.
- We have FIVE tight ends who will see quality time. Never seen such a deep group in my life, and that is AFTER losing Jake Butt to graduation and Devin Asiasi to transfer.
- Who is not excited to see the true freshman WRs? Best receiver class in Michigan history. DPJ and Tarki are special. Oliver Martin could be another Kolesar or Calloway.
- Ulizio winning the starting RT spot, at least for now, is one of the biggest surprises of the fall camp. Perhaps it should not be, however. Don’t forget that the reason why he was not not mentioned as a front-runner heading into fall was due to his missing a lot of time during spring practice due to an injury. Back last fall the staff was speaking more highly of him than classmate Jon Runyan. Also interesting to see that the staff is going with one of their first recruits over a couple of kids who committed to the prior staff (JBB and Runyan). Still, I think this will be a battle between Ulizio and Runyan for the next few weeks. Lets see if Nolan can hold onto the job on the field.
- Looks like Tyrone Wheatley will be starting at TE. Did Bunting missing time early in camp set hiom back where he is now only number three on the depth chart after Wheatley and McKeon?
- Pleasant camp surprises: Ulizio, Ben Mason, Kwity Paye, Kareem Walker, Josh Ross, Jaylen Kelly-Powell
- Need to step it up: David Long, Brandon Peters, JBB, Josh Uche (inj), Elysee Mbem-Bosse
- We were hearing a lot about Benjamin St. Juste in spring, but Kelly-Powell is getting more mention at corner right now after Ambry Thomas among the true frosh
- What’s up with Wrobo? Don Brown was raving about him in spring. Not hearing much on him late in camp. Passed up by the youngsters?

Roster Updates
I have done a quick review of the roster that Michigan just posted the other day. A few comments:
There were 15 true freshmen who were reportedly planning to attend Michigan as preferred walk-ons this season. Ten of those 15 are listed on the 2017 roster, five are not. Below is a breakdown of all 15 preferred walk-ons. The first group are those that are on the roster. The next group are those that are not.
Of particular interest is the move of MaxPreps first team All-American Matt Brown from LB to fullback. This is a brilliant moved given the lack of underclass fullbacks on the team and he has a realistic chance of being the top back-up to Ben Mason in 2018.
Also of interest is the only other true freshman to make the roster, Lake Orion grad John (Jack) Luby, who is listed at 6-6, 241. He must be rapidly filling out as he was just 6-6, 211 or 6-8, 189 as a prep senior back in 2015. I wonder what he has been doing the past couple of years as he is listed as a true freshman on the roster despite being a 2015 high school graduate. Certainly filling out.

Turning towards the upperclassmen, some position moves and other items that have caught my attention that you may be unfamiliar with are the following:
- Daniel Jokisch (son of former Michigan player Dan and nephew of Paul) moving from wide receiver to the offensive line. That may seem like an odd move on its face, but at 6-4, 251 he never had prototypical size for a receiver.
- Michigan lists five walk-ons at TE, including two PWOs I like a lot in Carter Selzer (who I had projected as a DE) and Connor Edmonds
- Two of the walk-on RBs are pretty solid as Joey Hewlett (son of former Michigan QB/S Rich Hewlett) was just put on scholarship and former Warren DeLaSalle star Tru Wilson could see time as per Dan Dierdorf on the radio today.
- Jack Dunaway is now listed as a LB, not a DE. He is the son of former Michigan TE Craig Dunaway
- DB Tyler Cochran is the son of former star Michigan CB Brad Cochran
- Kyle Seychel is back on the team after leaving last fall. He is expected to be the starter on kick-offs
- Frosh PWO Jake McCurry shined as a prep receiver, but with so much talent at the position in that class he is getting a look in the secondary
- Frosh PWO OLs Jesse Speight (Wilton’s brother) and Sean Fitzgerald are quality walk-ons
- One of the reasons why long-snapper Scott Sypniewski was not invited back is because the staff has loaded up on PWO long-snappers the past few years, with soph Cameron Cheeseman challenging senior Andrew Robinson for the starting spot and frosh Matt Baldeck waiting in the wings

That fits me perfectly.”"..............As a senior G/DT on a 5-4 team he had 7 total tackles...............The Morning Sun Offensive Player of the Year: "There is a bit of irony that Sean Fitzgerald’s favorite go-to restaurant is Great Wall of Mount Pleasant. He even began the weekly ‘Great Wall Wednesdays’ team bonding day, where teammates would meet for a meal at Great Wall of Mount Pleasant. “As a kid I spent a lot of time at the Great Wall buffet,” Fitzgerald laughed. “My friends and I always went there. So I was thinking, ‘Why not have Great Wall Wednesdays?’ We’ve gotten a picture with the manager and everything. That’s the one thing I’ve looked forward to most the last few years.” The Oilers began the season 1-4 as they were clearly adjusting to new roles, but once the dust settled Fitzgerald and company embarked on a four-game winning streak that nearly propelled them into the postseason. Fitzgerald managed to accept how the season concluded despite the lack of a playoff appearance. “Coach McIntyre told us that he’d never ended a season with a win before,” Fitzgerald said. “It didn’t sink in for us at first and we looked at each other wondering what he was talking about. Then it all made sense. It gave us a ton of motivation to go out and get a win in that last game, even if it wouldn’t be enough to get us in the playoffs.” Mount Pleasant overcame a two-score deficit against Saginaw Heritage to secure a 28-17 victory. In nine games, the Oilers gained 1,966 yards on the ground and passed for an additional 935 yards. Fitzgerald even contributed a rushing touchdown in a win over Saginaw Arthur Hill. “When he came to us as a sophomore he was really just a guy who wanted to run around and block people,” McIntyre said. “That is what football was to him. But over the last three years, he’s really progressed into a leader for our program and especially for those offensive linemen. He made that offensive line group feel special, with things like Great Wall Wednesdays.” “To be honest with you, without him and those five or six offensive linemen – we don’t win five games. They were the glue that held us together all year.” But as an offensive lineman who improved his craft considerably over the last three years, he gives the utmost credit to Mount Pleasant offensive line coach Andrew Biedenbender. The 6'3" 230 lb. Florida-product visited Michigan last weekend as a potential preferred walk-on to the football program, but he's already managed to overcome insurmountable odds when he beat cancer last year.Diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma some two years ago, Veingrad battled and beat cancer, returning to the field in 2015 after missing some time to undergo chemotherapy and treatment................ Palm Beach Post: A knee injury cost Ryan Veingrad his entire sophomore season with the Spanish River football team. Cancer could have claimed far more.The 6-foot-3, 230-pound defensive end was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma in December 2014, just a month after the football season ended.The diagnosis came as a surprise to Veingrad, who was in good physical condition at the time.“I actually felt fine,” he said. “I just started getting big lumps on my neck, and then we went to the hospital.”Veingrad began immediate treatment for the disease, a type of blood cancer that affects the lymphatic system. It is one of the most curable forms of cancer with treatment, which often includes chemotherapy, radiation or both.“They told me the chances of (treatment) being successful and working were pretty high,” Veingrad said.Veingrad underwent two rounds of chemotherapy, one at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis and the other at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood.He missed two weeks of school, and lost 35 pounds.The ordeal was a challenging one for Veingrad, both physically and emotionally. But the treatment worked. The cancer was gone.Life returned to near normal for Veingrad, who was eager to get back to the weight room after completing his treatment. He began a workout regimen about five months after his diagnosis, and slowly grew stronger.“I’ve been working out, trying to get my weight back up,” he said. “I went down to 185 pounds.”It took Veingrad months to regain the weight he lost during his cancer treatment, and he remained underweight as the 2015 football season got underway.But he started at defensive end for head coach Bill Ceasar and the Sharks, who shook off years of futility and finished 5-5.Ceasar attributes much of Spanish River’s success last season to Veingrad’s leadership and perseverance following his illness.“He’s an amazing inspiration,” Ceasar said. “Kids realized if he could do it, they could do it. Their feeling tired could never compare to what he went through. He’s the first one at practice and the last one to leave. He’s working hard. He’s working harder than people who have no setbacks. That kind of motivates other kids to do better and to try harder.”Veingrad, whose dad, Alan, is a former NFL offensive lineman, has high expectations for his senior season.Back to his original playing weight, he hopes to lead Spanish River to the postseason, set personal bests in a handful of defensive categories and draw attention from college coaches.“I want to win as a team and personally lead the county in sacks and tackles,” said Veingrad, who is in Blacksburg, Va., this weekend for a visit to Virginia Tech. “I just want to play as best as I can and hopefully get a scholarship somewhere.”
