Look, if someone is being mistreated that’s no less an issue simply because that person is a celebrity. So if Britney Spears was being victimized by her father (and that certainly seems plausible), I hope that can be remedied.
But I’ve been watching the volume of “news” coverage devoted to this topic — much of it by media companies whose focus is ostensibly real news — with growing concern. The breathless way in which they treat every twist and turn as if this is a story with any consequence for anyone other than the principals is disconcerting. But now I learn that we are referring to it as the “Free Britney MOVEMENT”?! We’ve given it a NAME?!
We are an entirely unserious country right now, and if we were the Bahamas that might not matter. But the world needs a serious and responsible United States and this is a big deal.
