Growing up and well into my adult years, I always dropped cash in the bucket and was always happy to do so. In recent years, I wonder how much money they’re still generating from ringing the bell outside the store. In this (largely) cashless world we live in, it must be hurting donations.
It was a marriage of convenience in the past. They took cash and I usually had change I could spare. Nowadays I never carry cash and I know I’m not alone in this. When I walk in the store I always say to myself, “I’ll get cash when I check out” and then invariably I forget. I noticed they have a sign with a text donation #, and their website I believe but how many people are going to make that extra effort? They’re all well intended, but it’s out of sight out of mind to a certain degree.
The mindlessness of the process when you carry cash was probably a huge boon for them. In the absence of that, I wonder how they’re doing.
