The new strain has been in the UK for awhile actually a few months. It has 23 base pairs that are different from the original covid 19 virus. Most of the changes are in the 10% that codes for the spike protein. It’s much more infective then the original but the morbidity and mortality is not totally known. So far it doesn’t seem any more lethal. 20% of the infections in the country and 60% of the new cases in London. This version maybe so infectious that level 1 masks and other precautions may not be as effective.

The rate of mutation is unusual. Most corona viruses tend to mutate one or two base pairs a month. This one is on PEDs!

The vaccine should provide protection from this new strain. The vaccines don’t just target the spike protein but also the 90% of the body of the virus. Of course there is a chance it may not but the vaccine should provide some protection even then. The new virus also has been able to elude some of the antibody treatments like that President Trump received. Those antibodies tend to be very specific.
