I posted a question a couple different Facebook forums asking practitioners in Michigan to give an assessment of what they are seeing. Multiple physicians replied from the West Side of the State to the Thumb.
All have said the same thing - this surge is seeing the admission of unvaccinated people, almost exclusively (if not exclusively).
This is the head on collision between vaccines and the VOC (specifically B117) that many of us have been discussing for at least a month.
Some of the responses,...
Last week the positivity rates were:
Livingston: 15.1%
Oakland: 13.5%
Washtenaw: 3.9% (Ann Arbor is an “oasis”, similar to last year)
Wayne: 15.1%
West Michigan: 15% positivity this week at Spectrum system.
“our admissions are trending younger now average 40-60 yrs, majority unvaccinated. we might have one or two fully vaccinated and a few that were not fully vaccinated i.e., completed first dose only.”
“It is bad. The average age is lower, I have not seen a single fully vaccinated patient with covid.”
Critical Care Unit report (from 2 different hospitals): “none of the patients admitted to the hospital with covid have been immunized.”
“Hospital declared an internal disaster and are completely overrun with cases. All patients I have seen are not vaccinated.,,,,Quite a few 20 and 30 year olds”
“So far, all the new positives I’ve seen were from those that weren’t vaccinated.”
From the “thumb”: “our case positivity in rate is around 20%. The people getting sick that I have seen are not vaccinated.”
“the Ann Arbor VA has very few cases, and it is thought to be the result of a very robust vaccination campaign, with 60-70% of veterans being fully vaccinated. Prior to vaccination, the numbers use to rise proportional to the numbers at Michigan Medicine, but now they are extremely low at the VA. Most VA cases have been in unvaccinated veterans recently.”
I appreciated the doctors taking the time to give their on ground assessment. I’d be interested to read what @Dr.Wolverine and other Michigan based healthcare workers are seeing. I’m 2000 miles away sitting in a state that, for now, is fine. And at the rate we are vaccinating, I doubt we will get hit as hard as Michigan.
