His OC Lombardi is absolutely horrid. The Lions continually event new ways to lose. What a debacle, a total cluster you know what.
OT: Is Caldwell the Brady Hoke of the NFL?

Caldwell's coordinators will go before he does. He will be given at least 4 years in Detroit. Caldwell had a honeymoon season in Detroit last year. His overall head coaching record is horrible including his days at Wake Forest. I was never excited about him as the new HC, however, Detroit's owners and management make for such a shitty environment that hiring a big named coach is NEVER going to happen for the Lions. The best the Ford's could ever do is hire a coach and give them total control like a Pete Carroll. That's not going to happen though. It sucks because the Lions are very talented. Letting Suh slip away this past summer was absolutely retarded as well.
forget the coaching, it begins with the front office. Mayhew can't draft and no one can figure out salary caps and the rewriting of contracts that ultimately led to the Suh loss. Frankly I hope the Ford family sells the Leos so . . .

I love how when the Lions stink it's about the head coach... How about that QB back there that no one ever wants to criticize. Caldwell went to the SB as a HC and took over the offense in Baltimore who went on to win a SB. I don't disagree that Mayhew has been average at best as we can see the results on the field but Matt Stafford has played like 2 good quarters of football this season.
Lombardi needs to go, and Caldwell needs to get on that pronto. Would any other team with Megatron and Tate continually try Bell up the middle for no gain? The play calling has been absolutely ridiculous. I'm not ready to put it on Stafford ... it's amazing he hasn't been killed in this offense!
Here me out. Let's talk about all of it.
Mayhew - letting Suh walk out of the door w/o any compensation was the last straw. He's made too many mistakes
Caldwell - solid coach.. Not Belicheck but not Brady Hoke either. Time will tell if he works out here. However, a lot of coaches haven't worked out here.
Lombardi - May be a solid OC but his system isn't a good fit for Stafford
OLine - They're not good. They can't run block. They can't pass block. Sometimes Stafford holds on to the ball to long but a lot of time the OL is just getting beat. That's on Mayhew primarily.
Stafford - Overrated but he has some decent qualities. He does have a big arm which Lombardi's offense doesn't seem to utilize but part of that is because the OL sucks. However, Stafford is wildly inconsistent with his accuracy which at this point in his career is inexcusable. Part of the reason Lombardi's offense doesn't mesh will with Stafford is because dink and dunk doesn't work as well with a QB who can't consistently make accurate short/intermediate passes. This is especially true if Stafford can't consistently make throws that allow WRs to to run after the catch.
So I see the issues.. but far too frequently people bring up all of the other stuff and ignore Stafford's shortcomings.

I don't see how Lombardi keeps his job. He can't play to Stafford strengths as much as he might like because the OL can't protect that long. However, if he runs his style of offense Stafford isn't as effective. It's a no win situation.
I've written this for years. It all starts with the ownership. See any successful teams. Tell me who their owners are -- NE, Seattle, Pitt, etc. It starts at the top and the Lions have had the worst over-all ownership in the NFL for the past 50 years.
