People think of the southern bahamas and think of resorts and beaches. this place is the brush. I used to live with them in nassau area, and when we moved back to the US, they moved farther south to Long island in the bahamas. This place is REMOTE. Their are beaches within driving distance, but it is far from luxury. I went to visit them 2x since they moved., and their island didn't have much before the storm, and now it is in ruins. Their house is the last drop on the DSL line so they have phone and internet.
anyway, their island is a MESS, as many may have seen. he reached me the other day via satellite phone and told me that they are safe, but that it is PURE chaos. the Government is trying to help, but its a lot of photo opps and ineffective relief efforts. Supplies are being collected in nassau, but when they arrive by boat, there is no way to get them to the people who need them. My friend is ex brittish army, and is OLD SCHOOL, hard working (about 55 years old). He and his wife have taken in his 2 elderly neighbors to make sure they are safe during the storm, and Im pretty sure the one's house would have been underwater, because of where it was located w/ proximity to the flooding.
he told me he didnt NEED anything, but its like asking macGuyver how you can help. Of course he will say he doesn't need anything. But he will be personally put new roofs on his 2 neighbor's house. Any money donated will go to him and he will use it for the supplies and will be putting new roofs on his house and his neighbors. He lives simple, so any extra money will be given to a local bahamian family with even less. He is a citizen there and has lived in the bahamas for 25 years, so its not like this is just a vacation home for him. These are his people.
