I was down a couple of hundred going into week 6 and decided to change things up. Instead of picking favorites and upsets, I decided to fade the really bad teams and teams dealing with injuries to critical starters. I bet against the Lions, Giants, Texans, and Browns covering the spread along with having them in a 4 leg parlay while also betting them to lose on money line as well. I’m now firmly in the black after hitting on all bets. I’ll fade the Lions as long as Goff is starting with the spread under 6 or if they’re playing a really good team like the Rams this Sunday. The line for the game is Lions +15 currently and will only go up if it moves. I’ll take the Rams all day at -15 with the state of the Lions linebackers and secondary. They’ll beat Detroit by 3 touchdowns or more. I knew they would be bad this year but not historically so. I thought the Lions would win at least a few games this season. The way this team is headed 0-17 is not beyond the realm of possibilities.
And Goff..Jesus Christ. He’s not only bad without McVay in his ear, he can’t even execute the simple aspects of his job. Goff is heading rapidly towards being benched if he continues being a detriment to the team with his awful play. Blough in at QB over Goff would be an instant upgrade. At least he has shown he can execute and make some throws over 5 yards accurately. Goff will never get another starting job once the Lions move on from him. He’ll be the most expensive backup QB next year if the Lions decide that taking the huge cap hit from releasing him after this season is too big to assume. The likely scenario is he will be released before the 2023 season begins when his cap hit is reasonable at 10 million and 5 million in 2024.
However, I think waiting until 2023 to release him would be a mistake. The Eagles got rid of Wentz, albeit by trade, and took a 35 million cap hit this year in doing so. It was more important to get him off the team in order to move on in a new direction. Having Goff on the team next year at the QB 2 position while starting either a new bridge free agent or a rookie QB would be an untenable situation that will be distraction and could fracture the locker room. If I were Shiela Ford Hamp, I’d pay Goff whatever guaranteed money he has left, cut him before next year‘s free agency period, and eat the 31 million cap hit next year. They’re going to suck in 2022 anyway with the state that roster is in. Even if the Lions landed the 2022 1st pick I’d look to trade down to accrue more draft capital in order to stock a roster nearly devoid of talent. They can take a QB in the 2023 draft where the class is projected to have some elite QB talent in the first round.
Will Shiela choose to act? Hard to say. It’s definitely the right path to follow in order to move the team forward with no distractions. However, she is still a Ford and I believe the Lions will never win anything as long as the Fords own the team. I have faith that this GM and HC will turn the Lions misfortune around as long as they are allowed to do their jobs. I 100% believe that Holmes and Campbell know that Goff has to go at the end of the season and are working on SFH to get her to accept the fact that he must go no matter the cost. Will she heed their advice or will yet another Ford in charge of the team make the same mistakes they’ve made in the past? We shall see.
Sorry to go off on a Lions rant..I’m just pissed at Goff for playing like dogs**t. His play either indicates he doesn’t care or is totally incapable of executing the plays, finding open receivers, and letting the ball rip at this point of his career. I watched the “All 22” this morning and Goff had guys open on nearly every downfield pass play. He either is not seeing them or is too tentative to make a throw and checks down. On the rare occasions where he does throw the ball downfield he is often inaccurate or under throws the ball. The regression he has made since taking the Rams to the Super Bowl has been stark. I think dealing McVay broke him irreparably.
All I know is that Goff should be off gone before the 2022 season for the good of the team. Hope I am proven correct in that assessment. Keeping him on the roster in 2022 would be a mistake.
