Having finished the 30 for 30 documentary on the 86 Mets( it was great) I wanted to compare them with my favorite sports team of all time the 84 Tigers.
Tale of the tape
Tigers- 104-58 only one loss in the post season
Mets- 108-54 five losses in the post season- to be fair LCS changed to 7 games instead of the the 5 game ALCS the Tigers played in 84

Manager- Sparky vs Davey Johnson Edge- Sparky not even close

c- Gary Carter vs Lance Parrish Edge- super close, but slight edge Mets
1b- Keith Hernandez vs Dave Bergman/Garbey Edge- Mets
2b- Wally Backman vs Lou Edge- Tigers
ss- Santana vs Trammell Edge- Tigers
3b- Ray Knight/Howjo vs Brookens/Hojo Edge- Mets
Rf- Strawberry vs Gibson Edge- a straight push, stats are almost identical Straw 259/27/93 28 stolen bases Gibby 282/27/91 29 stolen bases
Cf- Dykstra vs Chet Lemon Edge- Tigers
LF- Mookie/Kevin Mitchell vs Herndon/R Jones Edge- Mets
Bench including DH- Teufel, Heep, Mazzilli vs Darrell Evans, Johnny Grubb, Castillo Edge- Tigers having a bona fide DH helps
starting pitching- Gooden, Darling, Ojeda, Fernandez,Aguilera vs Morris, Petry, Wilcox, Berenguer, Rozema Edge- super close but Mets, the first three on both sides cancel each other out but Fernandez , Aguilera gives Mets the edge
Bullpen- Mcdowell, Orosco, Sisk vs Hernandez, Lopez, Bair Edge- Tigers in a big way
Stadium- Shea vs Tiger Edge- Michigan and Trumbell
Fanbase- cokeheads vs blue collar Edge- push, although both fans know how to rush the field like no other

Verdit- Tigers in 7..... bullpen being the difference, you get that team with a lead heading into the 8th it was game over! Maybe the fair question would be to ask Hojo which team was better since he was on both.
What say you?
