I know Nua gets a lot of hate and many people think he’s getting the boot, but I think we should give Nua a shot at DC.
1. He’s an ace on the recruiting trail. Was able to land 2 star Italian Mammoth of DT this cycle out of the East Coast. Remember- Nua offered this guy and he literally commited hours later- this speaks volumes to his recruiting ability. How many times has a d-line coach been able to seal the deal with a recruit who amassed 24 sacks as junior so quickly? Impressive
2. Health- other than Hutchinson and Paye picking up injuries, the line was healthy for the most part. In addition, his defensive line didn’t cause any injuries to the opposing offensive line or quarterbacks, as he would run stunts on every passing down, allowing the offensive lineman to essentially take a play off as they were never actually in contact with his d-lineman. Also, Nua kept the opposing quarterbacks heathy- w/ limited pressure and sacks, he allowed the opposition to use their first string qb for the whole game. While this may sound like a negative- it’s actually a positive. Instead of potentially hurting the opposing qb and having a backup come in, Michigan didn’t have to worry about studying any back-ups.
3. The Polynesian pipeline. Nua will recruit a 3 star Polynesian out of California harder than a 5 star that grew up a Michigan fan. With ~60 nfl players having Polynesian roots- this is a great strategy. That amounts to less than one NFL team and their practice squad. IMO, Nua recruiting only Polynesian student athletes would greatly improve the defense. The only problem is this: in two years, he has yet to land one. However, if promoted to DC, he could easily land multiple.
4. Bulldog of a recruiter
He won’t be “annoying” to the recruits- reaching out every few months gives recruits the illusion that Nua is a chill coach and will give players and recruits alike their space- no recruit wants to have their phone continually blowing up- they’d feel wanted a bit too much at that point. This strategy will surely land him multiple highly talented players over schools such as Alabama and Ohio State that really put the press on some recruits.
