more talent at UM next year than he ever had at BC. Which is the only reason for hope given we are basically losing our entire starting defense after this year. Thoughts?

Gary and if Hurst comes back this team will still be dangerous. McCray and Bush at LB. Corners will be the biggest area of concern and depth but we will be just fine. Tough schedule next year with a game against FL in Dallas. @wisc who will be very good next year as they are young. MSU and OSU all have tons of starters returning. JH had recruited well and I think having all these freshmen play will be hugely beneficial. Our RBs and QBs will be our strongest position group next season. Hopefully O line is great to.

I don't think there will be drop off...great recruits for the new year and Our head coach and DC have created a New England Patriots environment and systems...those don't fold easy, just need small amounts of talent in the right places that make others better and give opportunities for everyone to be successful

Agreed with what is being created but the NFL and College are way different. NFL players are ready upon arrival. Most, not all college players need time to be very impactful.

I thought Illinois did a nice job minimizing the pressure of UM. It looked like Illinois on obvious passing downs went with a tight OL protection to clog up the A gaps since UM bull rushes OLines.

Kept a TE to block rather than a fb who is going to be overmatched on occasion. Good coaching and I think you will see that more going forward.

I am not sold on Brown going forward. I think his mindset is that he was really successful at BC so he can get away with the same stuff in the BT. He tends to like guys who can get to the qb and blitz who are undersized which he can get away with if he has a great DL.

He walked into an ideal situation. He reminds me of a guy who can offset spread systems better than power I systems.

No. I meant that Illinois did a nice job in protection and it was at the end of the game that UM got more pressure.

I don't doubt your point here...but isn't that why they are playing everyone, almost every game and burning so many red shirts? They will not walk onto the field not ready. Also , if we continue to get these great Pro ready players like Rashan Gary...we will have a great opportunity to hit our apponents right away in the mouth. Better players + great coaching = great results when they are all getting better by playing football

If the opposing team keeps a tight end in to block, we've already won unless the opposing qb has pin point accuracy and/or insanely good receivers. Think about it in the simplest of terms, a numbers game. They have 5 olineman to block our 4 d lineman. We bring say 2 guys on a blitz and the offense keeps the TE in to help pass block. Now they've got 4 eligible receivers against our 5 defenders, 2 of whom are Channing Stribling and Jourdan Lewis. You know what's going to happen? Exactly what happened on Saturday. The qb will have more time but really bad options to throw to. No one on our schedule from here on out can max protect and expect to have much success throwing. Now, we get in a game down the road with Clemson and we can talk but something tells me Mr. Brown would be ready

Amazing thread. UM is one mistimed defensive play from scoring another shutout. And the miss was by a fingertip. I withheld judgment about UM for 5 games (I think I posted that) and cannot remember a stronger defense maybe out side of 1997. This team is quick (built to stop the spread) but also can win smash mouth.

Next season has a lot of holes to fill but no one mentioned Mone in the mix and if anyone is noticing UM is filling up on defensive commitments. I'm waiting for one or two more LBers, the OL, and some secondary.

Future looks pretty secure to me.

He completed 4 passes....
As another poster says...Illinois had to max protect which gave the UM secondary an easier time defending less wr's since Illinois was clearly max protecting on pass plays.

What I noticed with Illinois is that had a tight OL protection scheme to try and take away the 'A' gap blitzes. I think you will see this a little more from 'our' opponents going forward. Take away the blitz from Brown up the gaps/max protect and then see if the qb can squeeze in throws. Going to be hard with Lewis and Stribling. This is a very good defense so even when you max protect and want to run the ball you still have to deal with the UM lb'ers.

Bottom line is teams may try this strategy to offset the blitzes but you have to run the ball well. It's like trying to out Harbaugh Harbaugh.

The biggest concern for me going into next year is the lb'ers. UM is going to take a step back on defense which isn't surprising.

Losing Gedeon who is a thumper will be a problem. I am not sold on Bush as heir apparent. Small and will be young. Thank goodness McCray is coming back. Losing Peppers will hurt but Furbush may be okay. Hopefully some of those guys last year will develop.

I am less concerned about the DL and the secondary. Defense will be young. Should be okay but nothing like this year. These types of defenses don't come around very often for any program. I wouldn't mind a stud LB in this class...someone who is a day #1 type guy rather than just a few guys who might be good in 2-3 years.

They played a very vanilla defense on Saturday. They didnt bring much heat at all. Thats fine if they want to max protect when mich is rushing 4. Those are bad odds unless you have stud receivers.

There was enough pressure to keep them honest while having to use 5 or 6 to block 4 in most instances.

my point exactly.

and to the earlier poster i did not miss his point he said pressure was a problem early, i said i saw the early game and was satisfied with it.

bottom line is it was another truly dominant day defensively
