the coaches were thinking. I believe he thought that they could have done something other than punt.

I told him...No Dad...they played it perfectly based on where they were on the field. I think he thought they didn't need to punt and thought the qb could run around and not punt. I told him...Dad...there were 10 seconds on the clock and if the qb got caught then MSU could win the game with a fg.

I guess my father was onto something if UM could have taken a safety if they were up by 3. I think he thought it was 23-20. Hey...UM choked.:(

Funny.

10 seconds is a long-time to run around........someone said they didn't think MSU had anyone back, I tried counting the MSU players and I could only count ten, the video is a bit grainy though so there may have been 11 attacking, in which we were not lined up accordingly......
It seems so simple, but on every play you have to execute, MSU did, UM didn't. I think we were a bit out-coached on that last play.
Looking forward the the B1G channel breaking it all down this week.

When you lose a game like that there is always a bunch of would have's should have's, because it it's hard to make sense of it. It was a fluke play. I wouldn't even call it a choke. It happens every now and then in live play where variables come into play. It just sucks when you are on the losing end.

Definitely had 11 players attacking, you have to ask yourself, why was our Guy at the top of the screen not blocking anyone? It wasn't a fluke play, we were in a wrong formation.....
The only way MSU wins the game is if they block the punt. We were out-coached on that last play.

Agree you were out coached on last play. That tends to happen to Harbaugh more than it should.

I'd love to say Jimmy and his staff were out coached on the last play, but way too many variables came into play. It might have been the wrong formation for the situation but the punt wasn't blocked. You will see other blocked punts in your lifetime, punts returned for TDs, bad snaps that allow the defender to pick up the ball and run uncontested into the endzone, but you'll probably never see a play like that again.

A bad snap, poor handling by the punter, weird bounce/flip that gives the MSU player the ball in mid-stride, the missed tackles on the TD run, any of which would have ended the game with a Michigan victory.

More than anything, you had a punter who saw what was coming - a full rush sans one outside man. UM looked they ran a normal punt - gunners and release blocking. At least 4 UM players where downfield leaving the remains UM players to deal with the push. There's no way the punter's not suddenly thinking about the onslaught that is about to happen...just enough to trip his nerves and the rest is history. A great decision by Dantonio cuz it was the only way he he had a .2% chance to win.

Agree....although I think Dantonio had a .002% chance to win. :)

The reason to in theory not block the wide guy is the punter is running away from the player with 3 guys blocking him. It's just a case of a guy flubbing the snap and MSU taking it from there. MSU deserves credit for making the punter 'crack' and executing from there on out.

O'Neil wasn't asked to do anything other than what he normally does. He is great at it and why did the play fail? He dropped the ball. Watch the play again...kick wasn't being blocked. I know people want to come up a coach to blame but this is on O'Neil while also giving credit to MSU for fighting to the end.

It is what it is. Do I think UM is better overall than MSU? No. Do I think UM should have won the game yesterday? Yes....but they didn't. The better team as AB won...winners find a way to win and if that means an opponent gifts you a play...then so be it.

I'm also an Iowa fan. Kirk Ferentz has been out coached quite a lot too in his tenure.

Sorry UM came up on the wrong end of that play. Seems to me like it was a massive fluke, and I hope you guys bounce back from it. The B1G needs a strong Michigan.

The coaches made the correct call with the punt. The only errors might have been not having a full protection scheme on when MSU had no one back to receive the punt. I think they also never covered what to do if you are unable to punt the ball with that amount of time on the clock. The assumed that the ball would be punted. We all know how the word assume breaks down. Not playing attention to detail cost them. MSU had a team on the field that had four walk ons it. They were a specially trained group just for that type of situation. Great preparation meeting opportunity equals being lucky. MSU trained exactly for that and U of M did not seem to have all the bases covered when it came to, "What If's.
