A lawyer representing some of the victims of Matt Weiss' computer hacking did a Reddit thread taking questions earlier today. Some interesting information came out of it, and you'd be shocked to learn MSU and OSU fans got involved trying to connect it to football....
Any victim of Weiss' hacking was notified by the DOJ and FBI directly. Assuming it took them awhile to accumulate all those involved. Must have been a horrible feeling for them to find out their privacy had been invaded in such a horrific way.
The question to be answered is when Michigan knew Weiss was behind the hacks that were caught on Michigan systems. They know he accessed accounts between December 21, 2022 to December 23, 2022. They alerted police on Jan. 5. Obviously, he was suspended and then fired by Jan 21. Michigan's playoff game against TCU was on December 31. Now it's very likely Michigan knew about the improper access, but didn't know it was Weiss until days later. But this is a sticking point rival fans are now holding onto, the idea Michigan waited until after the playoff game to act. The lawyer says there is no evidence of that but they are trying to fill in the full timeline.
She states in the thread he was only looking for personal photos when someone suggests it's about football. Someone also asks why Michigan seems to keep having issues, she points out Michigan State, Penn State, Ohio State, USC, etc all have had issues.
Michigan's involvement as a defendant in the suits is for a failure to protect the systems the Weiss hacked into, not for anything regarding their behavior or actions with Weiss. Now, if timelines show they did not act soon enough, or ignored evidence, that will change, but the lawyer says there is no evidence of that at this time.
