Michigan's football staff continues to grow.

The Wolverines have added former NFL running back Alfonso Smith as an assistant running backs coach.

Jay Harbaugh embracing new role coaching Michigan running backs


The primary running backs coach is Jay Harbaugh, who moved to the position after Tyrone Wheatley left to take the same job with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Harbaugh previously coached tight ends.

While the running backs said in the spring they liked Harbaugh's focus and attention to detail, adding Smith gives the backs a coach at the position who can speak from game experience.

After playing college football at Kentucky, Smith played from 2010-14 the first four years with the Arizona Cardinals and in 2014 with Jim Harbaugh's San Francisco 49ers. He finished with 55 carries for 175 yards in his career.
