TheWolverine.com was out at Harper Woods (Mich.) High to see Michigan wide receiver pledge Tay’Shawn Trent in his senior opener, which his squad won 55-13. Here’s some breakdown on his game and intel we picked up from talking to him …

*** Let’s start with Trent’s performance. He wasn’t very active early on in the game while starting at wide receiver, garnering no targets (granted, his squad was running the ball quite a bit in the early going). Trent didn’t start on defense, but entered the game at outside linebacker early in the second quarter. He had one tackle for loss, but on the next play, twisted his ankle, which forced him to miss the rest of the half.

*** Trent re-entered the game in the second half and made an impact right away. He burned a cornerback in one-on-one coverage on a post route, caught the ball in stride and wound up in the end zone for a 40-yard touchdown. His only other reception was a screen pass that went for roughly five yards.

*** Now, let’s discuss Trent’s commitment status. Our EJ Holland has alluded to this murky situation over the last few weeks (one of the reasons why we took the time to go and speak with him). It’s unclear at this time whether or not Trent is a take for the staff. When asked what his conversations with the Michigan coaches have been like, Trent said he hasn’t heard from them lately. He also mentioned that other schools have not recently reached out.

*** EJ Holland will be chiming in soon with some more insight, as he was able to pick up some more nuggets on this sensitive situation this week.

*** One last note … Harper Woods is also home to 2024 defensive back Jacob Oden. The 6-1, 182-pounder is young and tough to judge, but he definitely looks the part in terms of a guy who can develop into a high level player. He played high safety for his squad, and has really good instincts. Not only did he not let any receivers behind him, he came downhill and made a few looks. He has a bright future and is certainly one to watch.
