Michigan hosted Pickerington (Ohio) forward Jerome Hunter over the weekend, the latest in a long line of visitors. Here’s where things stand …
The Hunter visit went well, but there was no commitment … and it appears he will take more visits, as well. Ohio State, under new head coach Chris Holtmann, has made an impression, and with the new coach in place, he wants to see what it’s all about.
Strong opinion … he’s also well aware that the Wolverines have other offers out, and that it’s possible a spot won’t be there for him. The 6-7 Hunter is Rivals.com’s No. 79 senior nationally.
Hunter’s visit was supposed to be when Akron, Ohio big man Pete Nance was on campus, but the 6-10, four-star prospect committed to Northwestern on his visit there before he could make it back to Ann Arbor. U-M was the favorite here, and had Johns not pledged first, Nance might very well be part of this class.
Michigan could have and probably would have taken him, but Northwestern was always a close second, and it’s possible the Johns pledge made it easier for him to choose the Wildcats, maybe even made the decision for him.
That made 2019 Clarkston (Mich.) three-star Taylor Currie’s decision to reclassify an easy one. The 6-9 Currie and head coach John Beilein both agreed it was a good move. Even if Currie redshirts in his first year, he's got a very bright future ... and one more year to learn from the U-M coaches.
The Wolverines are still in on a number of 2018 targets, and as of now there’s only room for one more. Canadian Ignas Brazdeikis (6-8, four-star) is one of the priorities, and he will likely visit again soon … either later this summer or for a fall official. U-M remains one of his favorite schools.
There will be room for more, too, and Michigan will continue to recruit shooting guards, in particular. Noah Locke, a top 100 shooting guard, has his offer and appears to be a priority.
Unrated Ty Mosely of Chicago had his visit postponed … it was supposed to be last Monday. He’s visited Illinois and will visit UIC coming up. We’ll see if his Michigan trip is rescheduled.
Ryan Young of Bethlehem (Pa.) Catholic is another who has visited. The 6-8 standout has come a long way, and he will be a high major somewhere. Any ‘18’s willing to wait (potentially Young) could have an opportunity to be heavily recruited by the Wolverines next spring, as well.
As of now, however, U-M coaches are in very good shape with their recruiting and have a lot of momentum.
Watch for more hoops recruiting news in the days to come.
